I've been thinking a bit about breaking up with shows, in part because I'm still mentally storyboarding a Future Ex-Girlfriend vid ("I don't care that you're a model" = that one lens-flare shot with Dean leaning on the car; "no one cares that you love Keanu" = Peter and Sylar throwing down Matrix-style; etc.), and in part because, though I haven't been fannish about Heroes since S1, I deleted the series from my DVR mid-episode this week after general spoilers for recent Heroes ) I should've known better, but residual affection for Hiro and Claire kept me going.

So what shows did you break up with, and when?  Defined any way you like, though my default would be "stopped watching."  Meaning that I never did break up with the X-Files; I just buried it.  Or, suggest shots for the vid, if you like.  Lyrics here.

... and what it means for fans, from [personal profile] serrico .  Read it here!  My emotional reaction to what SPN is doing with fans has largely been negative, but I don't think that invalidates it as storytelling (just makes the storytellers jerks, and ties in with their other gender issues, but that's a whole 'nother thing).  Jayne's analysis is really useful as categorization and explanation of why Heroes feels so cold in its interactivity even as it's doing everything Henry Jenkins is selling as the future of entertainment.

I decided to write up a list of vids I never get tired of, trying to limit myself to one per fandom except SPN, which means a large number got excluded. It’s also interesting to see which from my old recs post have become “rewatch a lot” vids. I’m definitely trending to faster cuts, but I still love my emo porn.

Angel, BSG, Chuck, Dark Angel, Doctor Who, Farscape, Firefly, Heroes, Highlander, Iron Man, Legend of the Seeker, Multi, QAFUS, RPV, Smallville, Star Trek TOS, SGA, Supernatural, X-Files  )

for [livejournal.com profile] chase820: What would a plastic surgery consultation between Christian Troy and Lex Luthor sound like? I know Lex needs periodic maintenance, what with all the lingering side-effects of the meteor. I could see him traveling someplace out of the way to have it done, so Papa Luthor wouldn't catch on and see it as weakness.

Datum for the part of the fan fiction argument that goes, "copyright owners have to oppose fan fiction or they'll end up getting sued when a fan story is like a later storyline": The section on NBC's website called "Share Your Heroes Theories: Tell Us What You Think Will Happen Next on 'Heroes.'"

As a practical matter at the very least, I think fan authors have no valid rights against the original copyright owners, even in the extremely unlikely event that the latter copied from the former. (Much more likely is that a fan story would extrapolate from elements in existing episodes/volumes in a logical way, and then the official version would do a similar thing, for similar reasons. That's just working from the same source. Fans joke about these situations as 'ripping off fanfic,' but we shouldn't -- the fannish hivemind extends beyond fandom.) I don't think ordinary disclaimers like "I don't own Superman" are all that useful or important for fan fiction, but maybe I should think more carefully about disclaimers that attempt to address the (overblown, but deeply felt) fears about being sued by a fan. The Heroes site, of course, only accepts submissions when the submitter agrees to a page of rules surrendering every possible right to NBC, and that's overdone and too legalistic for fandom, but maybe there's something short and sweet one could routinely say disclaiming any interference with the original copyright owner's rights to create new works.

Three different fandoms, one song.  It's probably not a great idea to watch them all at once, but the contrasts are quite intriguing because of the different meanings and different relationships illustrated by "sometimes it feels like/you don't have a body."  I also particularly like the three different interpretations of "try to speak American."

Heroes (Peter):

Firefly (River/Mal/Serenity -- well, that last one is my interpretation, but isn't she necessarily part of them?):

My Yuletide story was based on Anna to the Infinite Power, one of my favorite childhood sf books/movies. I still like both versions on recent rereading/rewatching, as stories about what adults expect of children who have been born for a specific purpose, and I have a huge jones for Anna/Rowan -- who isn’t really her brother, so it’s okay but still creepy! Anna and Everything After, by Dira Sudis, shows that liberation isn’t the end of the story, because Anna – or whoever she is – is still constrained by her (or someone’s) past.

The story I wrote is Clarity, a Heroes story featuring Claire. One is not born, but rather becomes, a hero: Thoughts on Claire Bennet )
