rivkat: Martha: when you're good to mama, mama's good to you (good to mama)
([personal profile] rivkat Jun. 14th, 2005 12:00 am)
For a variety of reasons, I've been hesitant to post about this -- but if you've seen me in the past month or so, it's been reasonably obvious: Z. and I are expecting a baby, come mid-September. (It could have been "too many cookies," as [livejournal.com profile] yahtzee63 suggested, but when two people on NJ Transit tried to give me their seats, I thought maybe it was clearer. But since then not a single person has offered like treatment on the DC Metro, which either throws the obviousness of my status into doubt or revises my beliefs about the relative friendliness of DC folks vs. New Yorkers.) Anyhow, Z. likes to call him "Shemp" or "Django"; I just roll my eyes. I wanted "Rivkid" to work, but it just doesn't.

I don't expect the journal content to change much -- though frequency of posting may eventually drop further! But I'm still thinking book reviews and fanfic as my general subjects. I may do a post of pregnancy books I found useful, and not so useful. And speaking of fanfic, help a girl out: If Superman were a spy, what sort of covert missions would be good? I want stuff that uses his unique talents while still staying covert, which is to say that punching holes in walls should not be a mission priority.

Congratulations! I wish you and Z the best!

And dear God? Why can't I imagine Clark being stealthy enough to pull of spy. I mean, I know he had the whole double life thing...he'd be stopping terrorists. Protecting people. If he was a spy.

Aww, congratulations! That's so wonderful! :D

Hmm. ...maybe something with stealing microchips out of places with lasers all Mission Impossible style? *coughs*

...yeah, I just wanted to congratulate you. I've got nothing. *g*

Congratulations!

I would think that the whole x-ray thing could be really handy (spying in the most literal sense) as well as that whole flying gig - I'm not seeing Clark having a hard time getting travel clearance. :D

baby-related: congrats!

fanfic-related: I'd user Superman as a low-flying, high-speed reconnaissance vehicle. He has photographic memory, can fly pretty much anywhere, has a small radar profile (I suppose; and maybe an angled armor or something would also help), he see through most substances (although everybody would start lining their bunkers with lead, of course), and it'd be really, really hard to shot him over Russia or something like that.

As an operative, I don't know. His speed, vision and invulnerability are certainly assets (and would make him impervious to all attacks unless very well prepared), but staying under cover severely limits what he can do (Bruce would be a better choice - he can tone down his skill and fight "kind of" well, while Superman "kind of" flying doesn't help him squat). And you don't want agents that can be made by the most routine X-ray machine or physical check.

*If* you write a ruthless, deadly Clark, then... Maybe. He'd be the perfect assasin, with nearly innumerable ways of killing a person, specially if he's willing to also kill witnesses and collaterals.

That's a scary thought, come to think of it.

I'm still in favor of the spot the microdot at the embassy reception idea, which you may recall from before things started to get set on fire the last time I saw you.

Also, anything where something had to be picked up by a courier in one place and gotten somewhere else really quickly, which could also lead to Clark getting to bitch about how no one ever calls the Flash for this sort of thing when they really should.

And congratulations again! Glad things continue to go well. I like the 'too many cookies' explanation, though. (Seat-giving is hardly a, well, given, as my sister can testify from her one time riding the subway while seven months pregnant with Frick and Frack.)

Congratulations!

If I were running a superspy agency (which I don't, but I do watch a lot of Man From UNCLE), I would think of Superman for surveillance missions, what with the x-ray vision and the superhearing. He could also use his speed and heat vision for sabotage. ooh, he could use it for assassinations, too, although you'd have to talk really fast to get him to do it.

Congratulations! And salutations to Rivkid! :) *is very happy for you* My brain is fried, so no Superman/spy missions forthcoming, sorry...

YAY for being knocked up! We're going there soon ourselves, Lord willin' and the crick don't rise, so I'll be interested in any book recs or observations you've got!

Also, I don't know if you're too far along to need this or not, but there's a great supportive community of (mostly) smart, liberal women over at IndieMOM (http://kvetch.indiebride.com/index.php?t=thread&frm_id=38&rid=59&S=f42c69a7e50fadd08ae39aa979f9ba0a) - it's a spinoff from a bridal board I was once an active part of, and I know several of the folks there. I recommed it highly if you haven't found a reliable online source for conversation/information. The navigation of the current software package drives me batshit, but there's loads of good info in there.

*hugs* Congratulations! That is fantastic news. I'm thrilled for you.

I liked "What To Expect When You're Expecting" for being relatively sane and generally avoiding absolute statements of anything.

Hey, congratulations! You could have Clark at a party using superhearing; just knowing what plans other governments were making would be pretty useful, as in, "don't give in on the steel tariff, but you can give them a good deal on beef if they push" type useful information.

Congrats! Also, I kinda like Rivkid. *sheepish*

Thinking in terms of what Superman could do, he's almost like a Swiss Army Knife. The guy could do some serious multitasking.

He's got heat vision, which is useful for minor destruction and/or sodering/welding things together. He's got X-Ray vision, useful for finding things(cameras, listening devices, weapons, etc) being carried around sneakily by other people. He's got the ability to hear things other people could not, so his ability to gather information covertly would be pretty high. He's got enhanced speed, which means he could find it easier to escape undetected or move around quickly to cover his tracks if necessary. His invulnerability would make him very difficult to torture for information, and his enhanced strength could make it very difficult to hold him somewhere. I think he'd make a great spy if somebody trained him well and got him into the appropriate mindset.

Congratulations! For what it's worth, "Django" has a certain coolness, and "Rivkid" is entertaining, so either way, go for it. ("Shemp", though...poor kid. Even as a random nickname. *g*)

As for SpySupes...given his choice of outfit, I find it difficult to imagine him being *covert*. Unless he goes undercover while he's undercover as Clark, in which case...heh. Sorry, just...*heh*. :)
