rivkat: Martha: when you're good to mama, mama's good to you (good to mama)
([personal profile] rivkat Jun. 14th, 2005 12:00 am)
For a variety of reasons, I've been hesitant to post about this -- but if you've seen me in the past month or so, it's been reasonably obvious: Z. and I are expecting a baby, come mid-September. (It could have been "too many cookies," as [livejournal.com profile] yahtzee63 suggested, but when two people on NJ Transit tried to give me their seats, I thought maybe it was clearer. But since then not a single person has offered like treatment on the DC Metro, which either throws the obviousness of my status into doubt or revises my beliefs about the relative friendliness of DC folks vs. New Yorkers.) Anyhow, Z. likes to call him "Shemp" or "Django"; I just roll my eyes. I wanted "Rivkid" to work, but it just doesn't.

I don't expect the journal content to change much -- though frequency of posting may eventually drop further! But I'm still thinking book reviews and fanfic as my general subjects. I may do a post of pregnancy books I found useful, and not so useful. And speaking of fanfic, help a girl out: If Superman were a spy, what sort of covert missions would be good? I want stuff that uses his unique talents while still staying covert, which is to say that punching holes in walls should not be a mission priority.

Congratulations!! That's fabulous! And wow, ANOTHER one! I've never known so many people having babies at once before this year--must be some kind of fertility epidemic! *g*

Superman and espionage is really fun and one of my favorite AU things to think about. Have you read Superman: Secret Identity? It's collected in TP now, and is about a man who is *not* "our" Superman, but who develops certain powers. It might be worth a skim if you've got a skim-friendly comic shop nearby. Also, have you read JMS's Supreme Power yet? It's basically the Justice League on crack (done in the Marvel MAX imprint), and Hyperion is the character more or less parallel to Superman. Except for how he was raised by US gvt agents instead of a kindly Kansas farm couple. So far there are two TPs (or both collected in 1 HC), plus the current issues that haven't been collected yet. Anyway, these two titles might give you some idea of what's being done along those lines in comics AUs.

One thing about remaining covert that critics argue about but I nitpick is the use of superspeed. Moving too fast to see runs really close to breaking the sound barrier--and causing really loud whooshing, or even sonic booms, in someone's living room is just really *not* covert, even if our hero's effectively invisible. *g*

Since Supes can see and hear anything anywhere, even from space, I think noninteractive reconn is going to be your safest bet...although it's kind of boring.

Secret Identity was one of my favorite (no-longer-so-recent) purchases. I will review it eventually when I stop being daunted by the huge stack of graphic novels by my desk. I haven't enjoyed the rest of Busiek's stuff nearly as much, unfortunately.

And I adore Supreme Power. (See icon.)

The sound barrier has always struck me as problematic. In SV they even have Clark kick up a big wind, but only once, for dramatic purposes (in the underground bunker with Lex & Dr. Tang), and never when he's speeding away from Chloe etc. It's inconsistent and annoying, and I agree that the whoosh factor would be far from covert.

Congratulations. That is a big change coming. Good luck!

Totally have no insight into Superman-the-Spy (36 hours of no sleep brain locks the best of us) but I do want to say congratulations. :-)

[1] Missions where X-ray vision is useful, like locating a kidnapped diplomat/innocent-bystander, or finding the hidden object all the spies want.

[2] Some covert action, where speed aids the infiltrator to move faster than a sweeping beam of light? Faster than a sensor can sense? Faster than pursuers can run, once the McGuffin is in hand?

Yay!

So much better than too many cookies!

Many congratulations!

Gotta say I had my suspicions when you posted about having a 'very good reason' to be too busy to see Serenity in September.

Wonderful news. :-)

Oh, so many congratulations, and welcome to the club! Do you know what you're having?

I'm sitting here with my handheld and an armful of a snuggly 2 month old who is interested in sleep but not in her crib and I swear, this is the most delicious thing in the universe.

If you have any stroller questions, etc....

A boy. Thanks -- we've been poring over Consumer Reports for advice so far. And we spent a bunch of time yesterday debating how long our blind cords could get without being a hazard, so there's still lots of stuff to discover.

Hee!

I am imagining what you'll crochet ... a little crochet Cthulthu, perhaps? Maybe a cape for a baby vampire?

Congratulations! That's just wonderful. All my best to you and Z.

Thank you for the card, which is so cute and elaborate that I stare at it in wonder every time it catches my eye.

That's terrific! You're baby is very lucky to have such a wonderful mom. :)

I would think Clark could sneak into places easily and look at them with his x-ray vision without actually breaking in. He'd be a natural at aerial recon too. *g*

I'm voting for Shemp, because I don't know how you would pronounce Django.
