Query: If you were perusing a slash archive, and found a story in which Clark is turned into a girl for most of the way through (and boffs Lex while possessing female equipment), would you feel wronged? I'm just not sure if I should post Skin Deep at the SSA, and I don't really want to get anybody mad.

Also, Stargate's Wormhole X-treme was exactly what I needed tonight. I laughed so hard my stomach hurt.

And finally, a friend and I were watching vids today, and she brought up the Groundhog Day cliche. You don't see it in stories so much, only film/television. Why is that, I wonder? Is it because repetition is easier to bear when viewed? You'd think you could write a quick repetition montage-like thing, but it would be a technical challenge. Hmm. Perhaps I shall add it to my list.

I think it's possibly also a huge in-joke for those in production, because the Endlessly Repeating Day is basically what a day's shoot is like, and it might be tantamount to how there's the "muse talking to writer" cliche in fanfic. Although perhaps the whole of fandom might be taken as a huge Groundhog Day effect. (ie. Lex shags Clark in the castle over and over and over...)

That's an intriguing idea about the connection between production and plot; it makes a lot of sense. I also like "fandom as Groundhog Day." The grown-up version of the fort-da game, I guess.

As for the Groundhog Day cliche, I can think of two Sentinel stories that used that premise ("Life Lived Like A Mentos Commercial" by Mallory Klohn, and I can't remember the other one, title or author.) And actually, Sarah T. and I were going to write one in SV once. Fun with Lex's particle accelerator! It had to be good for something, right? We wrote the whole setup, got about two days in and stalled.

It would've been funny, though. :D Poor Lex. We gave him the worst day ever. Jonathan lectured him, and Lionel yelled at him, and Clark was wearing a really tight shirt and being clueless. Oh, and the fertilizer plant blew up. *grins*

I'll bet you're thinking of "Deja Vu" by Alexis Gunn. (Her stories are here (http://members.tripod.com/AlexisGunn/sentinelstory.htm).) I remember quite liking it when I read it. In fact I feel stirred to reread it now. Nothing like authorial avoidance in action. ;>)

Yes, that's it! *beams* That's really such a great structure for a Jim-fic, because he's utterly believable both as the guy who's realized that the repeating day gives him license to act like an insane asshole and enjoy every minute of it... and also the guy who is finally happy during the day by just being a big SWEETIE to everyone who crosses his path.

*sigh* Thanks for the link.

"Cascade, huh?" asked the trooper, looking at his license. "May I ask what you’re doing up this way, Mr. Ellison?"

I would pay serious money for that story. In fact, if you still had the notes around, I would kneel at your feet and beg to see them. After a night of pondering, I thought my version would have Clark doing the repeat, and Lex dying at the end of the day. But yours sounds much better.

Oh, and also, I'd say go ahead and post Skin Deep to the SSA. It's definitely slash, it's just.... weird slash. *grins*

Plus, speaking of Stargate, you've seen the ep. where Jack gets caught in a repeating day, right?

From: [identity profile] rivkat.livejournal.com

Oh, yes. I thought RDA did a horrible job in the bodyswitch episode; he was hardly trying. But he made up for it in the repeating day, with Teal'c and the juggling and Daniel's question that he never did hear.

Weird slash is better than no slash at all.

From: [identity profile] kickair8p.livejournal.com

Oh, yes. I thought RDA did a horrible job in the bodyswitch episode.....

Granted, but Teal'c is a difficult character to play well. And I think RDA's performance suffered in comparison with CJ's, who played O'Neill fantastically (and hysterically) well.

It was slash, and I loved it. I read it this morning, sort of wondering the same thing, and then I remembered similar stories in SV fandom from long, long ago. Thank goodness for you, reminding me of how much I enjoy this particular kink. Yes, I think similar stories got posted to SSA, but don't ask me to name any. Alas, my memory isn't what it used to be.

I'd wondered why you hadn't posted the story to SSA. I don't normally read stuff at Level 3, though it downloads to my LJ. Almost took a pass on it, but then I asked myself when I'd ever not read one of your fics, and therefore had to go back. Glad I made that decision. Thanks for still writing in SV.

From: [identity profile] rivkat.livejournal.com

I didn't even know Level 3 had a LJ feed. I have SSA, but not L3.

I'm glad you enjoyed the story. I'm not done with SV yet, that's for sure.

I think it's better on screen because you can alter things slightly and wait for the audience to catch it or not. In writing, I'd be more likely to notice the exact changes. It wouldn't come off as well.

I also think it's more popular on tv than in movies. Movies will do it, but pretty much EVERY sci fi program does it at least once. Sometimes they do it once a season. Why is this? Simple: the tv format is all about repitition and bite sized chunks of plot. Movies and books don't have commercial breaks and a 45 (48/50/whatever) minute limit that dictates the structure of the story.

From: [identity profile] raincitygirl.livejournal.com

I just read Skin Deep after you posted about it, and I'd say *definitely* post it to the SSA. It's great stuff, and it's still slashy. You might want to put some sort of warning at the beginning, though, if you're worried people will be annoyed.

From: [identity profile] eliade.livejournal.com

I think gender-switching stories are still slash and I actually find that a fascinating thing. It's also a big kink of mine. *g*

"Groundhog Day" is one of my favorite movies. You would bat that concept out of the park if you wrote it. And also I would lick you or make a tiny shrine to you or just sigh your name moonily if you did.

Dude, how did I miss this the first time around?

I somehow missed this when you first posted it. I just finished reading it, and wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed it, especially the ending. :)

From: [identity profile] bexless.livejournal.com

I somehow missed it first time round too, which I don't understand, but I just read it and *loved* it. And it's definitely slash, because it centres around the relationship between Clark and Lex, who are both male. Clark just gets, you know, transfigured for a good portion of the story.

*basks in rivkafic goodness*

From: [identity profile] scribblinlenore.livejournal.com

"Skin Deep" definitely belongs at the SSA. There may be girl parts, but it's about Clark and Lex.

From: [identity profile] pearl898.livejournal.com

Great story. It was new to me as well. Love body switching fics. For what its worth, I think its more slashy than het actually.

From: [identity profile] tobyfan.livejournal.com

Oh wow. This is a great story. So romantic, so beautifully written. YOu should definitely archive it at SSA because the love between Clark and Lex is apparent all the way through. *sigh*

Gorgeous story.

From: [identity profile] garryowen.livejournal.com

Eek. I just finished your story. I never cry at stuff I read, but the fact that I was on the BRINK says quite a lot. Good gravy! as my grandmother would say! I can't usually handle het stuff, but I did not feel wronged at all, and I think you could put it at SSA--the summary says it, yes?

Anyway, the scenes were great, and the movement from the initial scene to where they are at the end is so wonderful. I totally didn't do my work because I was reading your story. But now I really must work.

Thanks for all your writing!

From: [identity profile] garryowen.livejournal.com

Oh, I see you posted at SSA. Yay! By the way, for a "Humor" story, this one sure made me sad! I mean, before the end. Then I was happy.

From: [identity profile] jfc013.livejournal.com

I'm vastly behind in my reading, so I haven't read this yet. I'd say it depended upon if Clark liked Lex whether he was a boy or a girl, felt like a boy for the most part, and that he and Lex got together after he became a boy again.

I can't imagine writing that cliche. Wouldn't it get redundant after awhile?

From: [identity profile] rliz.livejournal.com

... I just read it, too, and jesus that was hot. And sweet, and sad, and funny, but mostly hot.

Smallville Day AKA Groundhog Day

I think this story can be done. I started an outline for one and think it would be a great idea. You can either do it where only one character knows that time is repeating, more than one character knows, or everybody slowly starts feeling it.

I remembered how much I liked the ST:TNG ep. where everyone slowly started feeling it. And to a certain extent BTVS where she needs to please a customer. What I like is if it is only one person that knows, like in Groundhog Day time can go by for weeks, months even years... but noone ages and only the person who knows matures personality wise. They can go through the stages of anger sadness loss aceptance, do really humarous/stupied things, thus learning about themselves and others. But also to face the horror of no future. If you have no future make the best you can of that day! *I personally think Clark would be perfect for this, since he still really needs to learn and grow* Plus Clark can foind out how Lex would act if he lets say told about the repeating day, would he believe him? or tell him is secrects? How would he react. And Clark would know that even if it goes badly Lex ain't gonna remember the next/same day. Oh the possiblities. What makes it interesting is you can have one mainish plot like in Stargate where Clark figures out slowly how to stop the time loop, but he doesn't work on it every loop. In Stargate the loop was metioned to be over 3 months.

Anyway once again I love your Skin Deep story. I would love for you to try the repeating day story as well. Another fetish I have is vampires, I've read only a few where either Lex or Clark becomes one. I would love to read a nice long with good plot story were Lex is turned into a vampire! *Sexy Lexy*

hi! *waves*

Just popping by to let you know how much I *enjoyed* reading Skin Deep. I stayed up til 5:00am this morning to finish it. :)

Girl-as-AU!Clark or Lex just doesn't appeal to me. But I *loved* this. I recognise our Clark, his *voice* and his adorkableness is still there, even with the girl parts. BTW, the Changing Room scene made my head go to interesting Lesbian!Clark possibilites. *g*

LOVED this story. And yep, I'm with all the others who think this should be at SSA.

From: [identity profile] chase820.livejournal.com

I'm just getting caught up on my latest round of reading and feedback, so I know this is terribly late. But I did want to tell you how much I loved "Skin Deep." You took a much-done concept that usually doesn't work and made it poignant and funny and believable. Your Clark/Lex relationship is, as always, complex and scorchingly hot. Thanks so much for sharing this with us.

Oh, and in answer to your question, I don't see why this story couldn't go at a slash archive. Clark's still a male consciousness, whatever happens to his genitalia. And there is the proper slashiness at the end.

From: [identity profile] rivkat.livejournal.com

Thanks! You're forgiven for being late if you produce more disturbing stories. Read that however you want. (As someone who finds Wesley hot despite his creepiness, I can still definitely appreciate why he'd be a hard nut to crack. Or strangle.)

From: [identity profile] chase820.livejournal.com

I seem to be defaulting disturbing lately, so no worries there. Even Eldorado II is turning out much darker than the first one.

I'm beginning to think Brian's treatment of Wesley in the last chapter was me taking out my frustrations on him for being such a frustratingly opaque character. But Brian still insists it was his idea. As you know from writing Lex, these alpha bastards want to take credit for everything.
