Hm. Because writers want comments/discussion and the option for privacy? But most of my friends never actually put any of their work on LJ.

And most bands don't put much of their music on MySpace, but they use it to connect with fans and offer teasers. It's not necessarily about an alternate distribution channel but a means of making connections with like-minded (or -eared) sorts.
