I just got a weird flame (?) on one of my journal entries; the comment was captioned "this is gay."

Oddly, the entry was a review of one book on prescription drugs and another on segregation in Alabama.

You gotta think -- couldn't my troll have found an entry that was actually gay? It couldn't possibly be difficult in this journal.

Hmm. Something like that happened recently to one of my Smallville friends. In one LJ entry she kept getting comments about sodomites and God hates you. Wonder if it's the same troll...

That actually sounds much more coherent than my little flamer, who couldn't even finish a sentence.

Hee!

"This is gay" is the statement of every person (using that word lightly) who can't formulate a more educated or well thought out response.

That person who wrote that? So gay.

Oh, you mean like my son used to say "That's just gay," when he really meant "stupid"? He got told off about that one often enough *G*.

I had a rash of 'eew! gay!' -trolls a few weeks back. I disabled Anonymous cuz they kept coming back.

It may well just be a random comment-spammer trying to use a phrase that won't be detected as spam.

Okay, sure, but ... why? It was an old entry; all the content of the comment was an aborted offer of some appendage of his; just someone out to make other people's days just a little bit worse? I don't get it. I understand spreading misery around, but I try to confine the radius to those who've actually helped cause the misery.

*snorfle* One would think...but such is the nature of trolls.

Aww, how disappointing! Flamers can be so much fun, it's such a drag when they're stupid. My best-ever flamer used more metaphors than the average Mary-Suefic and a healthy dose of poetry. I sent copies to all my friends!

By the way, would you mind if I linked to your law journal note on fanfic in my latest kerfluffle with the Lee Goldberg anti-fanfiction crowd?

I think I'm doing fairly well as Defender of the Minority on that blog, but they seem convinced that I'm making all the evidence up. I thought hearing from a few scholars might persuade them to quit name-calling already.

Sure, if you'd like. The problem is, it's easy to get tired of having that battle and retreat to a kinder, gentler place, but if you're in there swinging, by all means go ahead. I have memories (http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=rivkat&keyword=Fan+fiction+and+the+law&filter=all) with a short legal bibliography, though of course that's far from all there is *academic* about the topic.

I'd take it as a compliment, 'cause you write some of the best gay sex and Clex plots around!

"That is so gay" is my middle-school daughter's new favorite phrase, which should give you an idea of the age of your troll. Every time Kid uses it to describe something, my response is that [TAKS testing] doesn't actually have a sexual preference since it's inanimate, and that using that phrase is really kinda insulting to the people she knows who actually -are- gay. now that I think about it, I haven't heard that in almost a week. Hmm.
