My 8-year-old daughter wants good HP fanfic--no Draco/Hermione, but otherwise anything that's good and similar to the content of the JKR books would be very welcome.

Since we've established that canon divergences are okay, may I recommend copperbadge's Stealing Harryverse. As the name might suggest, the series starts before Harry gets to Hogwarts, and then does a re-write of the first several books (with notes on where Sam was going with the rest of the series if he had actually written them). These have been some of my favorites since I first got into HP. Oh, adult background relationships are Remus/Sirius, Snape/Tonks.
