My 8-year-old daughter wants good HP fanfic--no Draco/Hermione, but otherwise anything that's good and similar to the content of the JKR books would be very welcome.

I recommend, with the caveats that it starts off not great (but gets much better! give it about...twenty chapters? don't bail in the first ten chapters, anyway) and people die increasingly often as the story progresses and also near the end of the million-plus words of mainverse story there's an instance of the phrase "Operation Brainfuck Voldemort", the Dangerverse by Anne B. Walsh aka whydoyouneedtoknow. Remus/OFC, Sirius/DifferentOFC, with eventual Harry/Ginny, Ron/Hermione, Draco/Luna, Neville/OFC. It critiques the books in a lot of ways, and diverges in a LOT of ways, but if she likes Living with Danger then she'll probably like the whole shebang.

[personal profile] abyssinia asked for HP recs recently, and I also collected some for her here.

Lots of links to gen recs. I haven't gotten through them all!

Since we've established that canon divergences are okay, may I recommend [personal profile] copperbadge's Stealing Harryverse. As the name might suggest, the series starts before Harry gets to Hogwarts, and then does a re-write of the first several books (with notes on where Sam was going with the rest of the series if he had actually written them). These have been some of my favorites since I first got into HP. Oh, adult background relationships are Remus/Sirius, Snape/Tonks.

Hi - [personal profile] jadelennox pointed me over here since she knows I'm a HP reader. Hope you don't mind me dropping in to recommend a few things.

To Shape and Change is a time travel story with Snape as Harry's mentor.

Fantastic Elves and Where to Find Them - this one is kind of a weird premise, but it's very entertaining.

The Cupboard Under the Stairs is mainly a Harry and Hermione friendship story, starting at the beginning of Harry's first year and diverging from there. It has a number of sequels and the last one is still going.

If ongoing stories are okay, there are also these:

A Marauder's Plan - diverges after Goblet of Fire and has a lot of Sirius and Harry learning how to be a family.

The Better Man - this is a 'what if Snape wasn't so terrible' AU.
