One small spoiler: I deem the treatment of the Samulet acceptable.  Symbol acknowledged; symbol placed in shared space so they can move forward and not back. Yes, the episode juddered from corny to mawkish with more alacricity than usual for SPN, but it was rarely painful despite the meta, so I'm calling it a win.

Yes, I really liked the way they handled the amulet.

I especially liked when Marie-director asked the "Dean" actress why she wasn't wearing it. She answered, 'It keeps hitting me in my lip."

Before he found out what symbolism it held for fans, Jensen said at a con that he was glad they'd ditched it. "That thing smacked me in the mouth all the time. I think I chipped a tooth, once."

So, I'm satisfied with how it was handled for the reasons you pointed out, and also for the physical meta mirroring.
