OH JUDGE KOZINSKI NO.

This story leaves way too much unclear--like, how was this unlinked subdirectory discovered? And it makes me sad that the Judge didn't know enough to password-protect his files. Safe computing--it's not just for kids anymore. I could say more about the relative credibility of his explanation that he kept the files as curiosities, but I'm just going to sit back and be glad that I have no judicial ambitions but still possess life tenure. ETA: in comments, [livejournal.com profile] judith_s points out that the judge has now suggested that it was a family directory and he didn't upload most of the pictures. Uh, the family that plays together stays together?

How I can tell I've been in fandom a long time: I was all "what, just naked women painted as cows? I think one could discuss the sexist implications of that, but, hey, kinks are kinks... oh, wait, there's an actual farm animal involved. Well, that's not okay. That animal could not give informed consent."

I think that's been one real benefit of fandom for me: your kink is, in general, ok with me. The actual farm animal was more troubling -- though I kind of do believe that he kept these because they were a mind-boggling catalogue of what humans can find sexy; if he'd really been into them sexually, I wouldn't have expected as much variety.

ETA: There was a really interesting piece in Slate about bestiality (http://www.slate.com/id/2165578/) -- it highlighted the pathos and the equality issues, setting aside any question about morality with respect to the animals.

According to ATL, it was a family directory and most of the pictures were uploaded by other family members: http://abovethelaw.com/2008/06/judge_of_the_day_alex_kozinski.php

*headdesk*

I am curious about the big gap between the LA Times story and a reported e-mail from the Judge to Above the Law, in which he seems to suggest his son uploaded many of the files. I mean, I'm potentially cool with people who like people who are painted like cows, but don't throw family members on the tracks unless you really mean it!

My reaction: that kid really loves his dad. And if he did do it (which is certainly also plausible), he must feel lower than dirt and I feel sorry for both of them.

As you can imagine, this came up at work in several contexts, and I had to carefully modulate my natural "porn! it's what for dinner!" stance. Especially since it's really not suitable behavior for a circuit judge.

ah well

Perhaps he didn't want to say his wife likes pr0n.
Or perhaps whatever.

Personally, I don't think what is on someone's puter should be the business of the pubic but I guess I am in the minority on that one.

Porvecito.
