The LJ user representative election is ongoing, and I think it may be worthwhile to vote, if only to show that there are people who take this more seriously than the lead non-fandom candidate does. As others have said, I’m dubious that LJ will take a user rep seriously, but I know that they won’t if the users vote for an asshole like him. From what I've seen,
rm,
vichan, and
legomymalfoy are fans. For more on the voting method, the wikipedia article on instant runoff voting is quite helpful. Intriguingly, there are situations in which voting for someone can cause her to lose, at least in theory, but overall the method has many attractive features, especially for a disorganized group like LJ users. It seems like a good choice of procedure, at least.
And while I'm here:
Black Widow and Black Widow: The Things They Say About Her …: I like Richard K. Morgan’s novels, and so I decided to pick up these books, which he wrote. He says he considers them feminist reworkings of the Black Widow character, who was new to me. She’s a former Russian covert operative with enhanced gymnastic skills and a real attitude. Feminism in major-label comic books--it’s a Marvel title; Daredevil and Nick Fury play important roles--is always a bit iffy; Vol. 2’s cover has Natasha (what else are sexy Russian women named?) simultaneously presenting both her breasts and her ass between Daredevil’s spread legs. And Morgan’s feminism seems to consist of having men do horrific things to women, though to his credit, that’s not fetishized, even the really really disturbing thing that was done to Natasha to create her as an operative. Anyway, men (and one lesbian) do bad things, for which Natasha and her friends take revenge. As with Morgan’s other work, corporate corruption is also very important as a story driver.
