rivkat: Rivka as Wonder Woman (Default)

My Yuletide stories:

Written for me, a delightful Have Spacesuit, Will Travel story in which Peewee grows up just as she should, with lovely details and a real Heinlein-meets-someone-who-can-write-women feel: Document 32 from the Russel Collection, on loan from the Franklin Institute, by Brown Betty.

I wrote two stories: Displacement, Eureka for Am, who asked for Nathan, Jack, beer, wings, a sporting event, and snark. Cheerleading’s a sporting event, right? Sadly, Am seems to be a dropout, but it was interesting to try Eureka, which has more charisma than it has any right to.

Your Pearly Whites, a Profit treat for [livejournal.com profile] serrico. I love Gail, and I love that she almost likes the things Profit makes her do.

Meanwhile, I have fallen in love with the BBC’s Jekyll, six delicious hours of cracked-out psychopathic goodness. E.g., Hyde: “Ever killed anyone, Benjamin?” Benjamin: “Not personally. I have people.” Hyde: “You’re missing out. It’s like sex, only there’s a winner.” Michelle Ryan (the new Bionic Woman) is gorgeous and morally ambiguous at best. The real attraction for me, though, is Dr. Jackman/Jekyll’s wife, Claire. In the first episode, she seemed clingy and useless to me. But I was wrong. She just knows what she wants – her husband, the father of her children – and she doesn’t care what stands in her way, fighting with wit and nerve. (Claire, rejecting Hyde’s claim that he isn’t her husband: “I married one man.” Hyde: “You miscounted.”) Some nice surprises, though a couple of them could have used some extra background, and I’m still mulling over the ending. Highly recommended!

I LOVE Jekyll. I watched it every week on the edge of my seat - James Nesbitt's acting of Hyde just got me right in my 'ohmygodsogood' place. And his wife - the bit where she turns around and just dominates Hyde, and it becomes this huge sexually-charged thing and you feel like he would do anything for her? Totally my favourite bit.

Ooh, except for the bit where Jekyll and Hyde are in perfect syncrony... that really got me going, too. I was... not disappointed by, but perturbed by, the ending, because it wasn't what I wanted and I felt it could have been stronger, but they are making a second season so all is good :)

I'm really, really hoping he grows a new Hyde, or something to that effect :D

...although I just realised that it was only on my friend's word, and when I googled it I didn't see anything... I hope I'm right about it.

I really enjoyed Jekyll; ita that Claire gets a lot more interesting as the show progresses. I felt that towards the end the plot started to show signs of strain, but the overall it was a lot of fun. I keep meaning to write fic for it.

Fic would be great! The comment above says there will be a second season; maybe we will get a good Claire story out of it.

You wrote Profit! I'm so excited! But I'm not letting myself read any of the Profit stories until I've had time to rewatch the series.

Oh yay! I loved Displacement and had been meaning to leave feedback ad then totally spaced on it. Cheerleading totally counts as a sport (at least according to all of my overly excitable cheerleading friends in high school) and the drunken Nathan/Jack was fantastic.

Thank you! I love cheerleading -- I actually watch it on ESPN2 whenever I can.

Jekyll is SO GOOD. So this is a Me Too post. Witty and well acted and much more nuanced than I ever expected.

I hope they do a second series.

More Claire! Michelle Ryan's character was good, but I think she's done, so I don't mind that she might not be able to return.

Your description of Jekyll is spot-on; it was the fandom of one of my Yuletide stories, so I've spent some time there recently.

I watched the series after I trolled through the Yuletide archive, but I went back just now. I was not a huge fan of Min, but I liked Miranda and I'm glad you wrote a story about them! And Min's initial impression of Claire was just like mine, hee!

They weren't characters to whom I'd particularly connected, but writing them helped some with that. As for Min's initial impression of Claire, it was mine, also!

Omg, Jekyll sounds awesome. Is it still in syndication or could I pick it up in stores? Will have to check.

Also, I have a question, since you are more versed in Smallville than I: I had the chance of getting a few Smallville DVDs at discount, but I didn't know which seasons to go with. I've seen the first two, but I can't recall what I've seen past that.

From: [identity profile] rivkat.livejournal.com

Sadly, I don't know about syndication. It's available on DVD, though.

I'm enjoying the current season of SV much more than the past two; I would have to say 2 & 3 are my favorite seasons -- both start out very well (Heat & Red for 2, Shattered & Asylum for 3). 5 does have the fabulous Lexmas, plus if you enjoy looking at women in bikinis 5 gives us an awful lot of Lois Lane. Though Lois is gorgeous, I think she was poorly integrated into the SV universe -- but I am a big Chloe fan and Lois's rise has necessitated Chloe's eclipse in many ways, so I am not neutral.

Lex's own "It's a Wonderful Life," except twisted: Lex sees what life could be like if he renounces ambition, guided by the ghost of his mother.

Thank you for your kind words. It's rather more wracking to write for someone you respect, even though one probably ought to angst as much when writing for an Unknown, I don't manage it.

I really enjoyed it! Have Spacesuit was one of my childhood favorites, and it's great to see a Heinlein woman do well -- he was okay with girls, but to get grownups we need fanfic. I don't know if you've seen this, but Connie Willis says that To Say Nothing of the Dog is her version of Kip and Peewee.

So true; I have the impression he *liked* women, but thought them as incomprehensible in their feelings and motivations as cats. I think next year, if I remember, I will see if I can persuade someone to rehabilitate Podkayne of Mars for me.

As to TSNotD, I see Kip in whatsisface, but I'm not sure I see Peewee in Verity. Still, that's neat, and I hadn't known!

From: [identity profile] rivkat.livejournal.com

Have you read Heinlein's original ending for Podkayne? I wouldn't necessarily count it as rehabilitation, but it's definitely thought-provoking. What I need is a fix-it for that lecture given to Poddy & Charles's mom.

I don't think I have! I mean, I am only aware of the existence of one ending. Where would I find the other?

From: [identity profile] rivkat.livejournal.com

I think it's in the newer published versions. If you google Podkayne and ending you will be spoiled for it.
