rivkat: Rivkid shakes tiny fist (shakes tiny fist)

LJ ate my first, second and third versions of this post. I guess it's just punishment for being away for so long that the damned interface is all screwed up.

Anyway, I haven't left fandom, or book reviewing. Don't give up on me!

Newsy:

1. Six months pregnant, due in May. The Rivkid doesn't quite get it -- see him smiling, all unknowing, here. Though he is starting to react to the phrase "new baby."

2. Up for tenure this year, nervous but optimistic. Or is it optimistic but nervous?

3. Getting further into SPN.
If you had told me two months ago “flashbacks to the X-Files – but in a good way, really” I would have laughed at you. Or smacked you. Well, I concede. You were right, fandom.

Side note: My first XF episode, which shaped my entire perception of the series, was Jose Chung’s From Outer Space. So you can imagine (or perhaps you heard) my loud squeals tonight.

Mely says that “the two of them on the road, alone together, forever” is a happy ending for XF but a tragedy for SPN, but I think it’s tragic for both; it’s just that it’s the best possible outcome for Mulder & Scully, and possibly for Sam & Dean as well. Anyway, Dean = v.v. pretty, and has overwhelmed my usual preference for book-learnin’ with his Gift of the Magi-like dedication to Sam.

So, fandom, where are the stories about how Dean hustles for money when credit card fraud and pool sharking just aren’t working? Where are those stories that also star Lex Luthor? (Note that, in my personal canon, Jason Teague and Dean Winchester resemble each other in the way of pretty men, but not uncannily.)

I think if Kripke opts for the tragic ending, it's going to be Thelma and Louise, only not the Grand Canyon: just the two of them, the car, and the Lawrence Hellmouth.

But I don't actually expect that, at least barring untimely cancellation. And yes, breaking up the partnership is worse than the partnership on the road forever, but narrowing their world to just the partnership (as an ending, rather than a vehicle for the show) still strikes me as sad and constrained and broken.

I'm with you on all that. But that's what fanfic is for, by god! All the possibilities, and the beauty among the sad and constrained and broken parts, and the sadness in the happy endings.
