LJ ate my first, second and third versions of this post. I guess it's just punishment for being away for so long that the damned interface is all screwed up.
Anyway, I haven't left fandom, or book reviewing. Don't give up on me!
Newsy:
1. Six months pregnant, due in May. The Rivkid doesn't quite get it -- see him smiling, all unknowing, here. Though he is starting to react to the phrase "new baby."
2. Up for tenure this year, nervous but optimistic. Or is it optimistic but nervous?
3. Getting further into SPN.

If you had told me two months ago “flashbacks to the X-Files – but in a good way, really” I would have laughed at you. Or smacked you. Well, I concede. You were right, fandom.
Side note: My first XF episode, which shaped my entire perception of the series, was Jose Chung’s From Outer Space. So you can imagine (or perhaps you heard) my loud squeals tonight.
Mely says that “the two of them on the road, alone together, forever” is a happy ending for XF but a tragedy for SPN, but I think it’s tragic for both; it’s just that it’s the best possible outcome for Mulder & Scully, and possibly for Sam & Dean as well. Anyway, Dean = v.v. pretty, and has overwhelmed my usual preference for book-learnin’ with his Gift of the Magi-like dedication to Sam.
So, fandom, where are the stories about how Dean hustles for money when credit card fraud and pool sharking just aren’t working? Where are those stories that also star Lex Luthor? (Note that, in my personal canon, Jason Teague and Dean Winchester resemble each other in the way of pretty men, but not uncannily.)

SPN was hysterical, wasn't it. And you're so right, this was so in the vein of "Jose Chung". That was one of my all time favorite X Files episodes.

2. I read this amazing and long fic (http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=big_pink&keyword=Red&filter=all) which has some hustling by Dean but if I explain more it'll give away the plot. This fic is actually gen.
And if you want a rec for a fic where Jason is Dean and there's some great John/Genevive backstory, let me know and I'll find the link...

Also, I disagree that it is a tragedy for SPN, necessarily; there are ways of them being on the road alone together forever that I think would be happy. I think the really tragic ending for me would be (like with Mulder and Scully), a breakup of the partnership along the original fault lines -- Sam quitting to go back to a normal life and Dean continuing truly alone because he doesn't know anything else. Because that would be a denial of everything that had changed or grown between them. And *that* would be truly sad.

There is a hustling fic where the PTA brings Sam cookies and Dean money. It's kind of funny, and I can't remember who wrote it. (And then there's another one that's not really funny and I can't remember who wrote that either.) So I'm basically no help.

Sing it -- this change in my usual preferences has surprised me as much as anything as I've gotten more and more sucked into the show.
And I agree with

I think there will not be a hug and a farewell and Dean driving off into the sunset, leaving Sam to his normal life with visitation privileges, at the end. I think this will end badly for one of them. Alas. Just a theory.
So, fandom, where are the stories about how Dean hustles for money when credit card fraud and pool sharking just aren’t working?
Oh, they're out there. BUt I think you should write one, too. I'll just wait over here. *g*

But I don't actually expect that, at least barring untimely cancellation. And yes, breaking up the partnership is worse than the partnership on the road forever, but narrowing their world to just the partnership (as an ending, rather than a vehicle for the show) still strikes me as sad and constrained and broken.
