1.  File under: apparently not as obvious as I thought:

"Kurt Opsahl, a staff lawyer with the Electronic Frontier Foundation, [says] 'You have of course a Constitutional right not to incriminate yourself, but you have to exercise that right by not incriminating yourself.'" (story about naughty deeds documented on MySpace)

2.  It seems that Six Apart thinks LJ, though wicked convenient, has an adolescent/niche rep.  Vox is the proposed answer.  I'm not sure adding "family" is going to do it.  "Neighborhood" is an intriguing concept, but what the heck is wrong with "reading list"?

3.  My G-d this is a good story.  Your Cowboy Days Are Over, by M.  SGA: What if the Wraith learned all about genetic experimentation from the Atlanteans?   Or: what could be enough to send John and Teyla into exile on a world where safety from the Wraith is purchased one memory at a time?  Great John, great Teyla, fantastic original world with aliens who are not as dangerous as the Wraith, but arguably a lot more evil.  Nearly 60,000 words, so set aside some time.

I think the point is that they're pushing promoting social networking rather than content. In turn that entices business to buy adverstising (or whatever) as they see consumers. In contrast those of us enamoured by words have no problem with reading list. After all we've thought of fictional folk as friends for years and cyber friends are just a couple of steps away from that.

Didn't Richard Bach say something about fictional people being real?

The quote in #1 above reminds me of one of Niven's Laws: "Never throw shit at an armed man. Never stand next to someone throwing shit at an armed man You wouldn't think people would need to be told this." He was referring to the Chicago Riots back in the '60s but, really, stupidity is where you find it. And you usually don't have to look very far nor wait very long.

Vox doesn't say "LJ for grownups" to me so much as "Myspace without all the heat-seeking spambots". As it's a poor copy of either one, I can't see it being the next big thing.

I think vox looks like Myspace which I hate because its to damn junkie. I think I like Livejournal and will stick with this.

I noticed that under differences between this and MT and LJ, it listed Vox as 'less customisable'. Well, they said "more turn-key", but that seemed to be the distinction they wanted to make.

People want fewer options? *boggle*

I appreciate the Vox link -- it did look vapid. Sometimes 6Apart makes me nervous.
