krummholz (KROOM-hohlts) - n., a forest of stunted trees near the timberline.

Thanks, WikiMedia!

Can be at either subalpine or subarctic tree lines, though given the obvious German nature of the word it probably won't surprise you that it was the former originally. The stunting comes from the icy winds of winter, preventing trees from growing tall without shelter. In German, Krummholz is literally "crooked/bent wood."

The Book of Pizza cover

Does anybody actually need this?

That’s the question my colleagues and I ask ourselves whenever we embark on a new cookbook. We know we can make the book. But to make sure it’s the right book, we first interrogate why anybody would want it.

When it came to our new pizza book, the question was easy to answer.

The post The world needed a pizza book. So we wrote one. : Introducing our newest cookbook, The Book of Pizza. appeared first on the King Arthur Blog.

Today was our last real day in Japan, with tomorrow being just a travel day. Our flight is at 5:30pm, but we don’t really want to do anything before then, so we’re just going to use the morning to pack before checking out and then take the bus to the airport and do a little more shopping there.

Today we had no plans so we ended up going to the Ueno zoo, which was very nice. A little sunnier than I’d hoped, but once we were in the zoo it was pretty shady for most of the time. We also finally made it to a Pokémon Center thanks to [personal profile] starlady’s suggestion of trying the Skytree one. Skytree’s mall was busy, but a normal level of busy, so we were actually able to get in the shop and buy some stuff.

Then we came back to Ikspiari for dinner before going back to the hotel and had super delicious tonkatsu and got dessert from Ichibiko again. We spent a lot of the day on trains, buses, and subways, but it was a fun day overall.

My initial mini-review is here: I reread the novel for this full review and can confirm that it is still an utter delight.

Titus Pilcrow is a colourman, a maker and supplier of paints and colours for artists. As the novel opens, he is in despair, because his landlord (also his ex) is evicting him. By a stroke of fortune, spoilers below )

In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.

Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.

The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.

Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.

It's been suggested that, if discussing spoilers for recent media events, it might be advisable to consider using the rot13 method to prevent other members seeing spoilers in passing.

The world situation is the world situation. If you're following the news, you know it as much as I do, if you're not, then there are better sources than scans_daily. But please, no doomscrolling, for your own sake.

The beloved internet meme "Neil Banging out the Tunes" celebrated it's 20th Anniversary

And speaking of rats doing improbable things (without the charm of the above) POTUS47 managed a remarkable week even by his usual, unbelieveably low, standards. Trying to save face when his chaotic Iran War went horrendously badly, to the extent he's now blockading a blockade that only exists because he set in motion the events which caused it in the first place. Milirary historians will be documenting this one for years.

Suffice it to say that when you manage to post an AI image so offensive that your own Christian Nationalist supporters come out on the side of the POPE in an argument (even momentarily), you HAVE to know you've buggered things up.

Count me among the noon risers who stumble,
dazed and bad-haired, from the nest midday,
pecking the crazed dirt for half-torn moth,
pear’s white core, severed worm. I’ve never
been one to trill at chink of dawn, to hop,
skip, chirrup before full sun. I’m better
at picking over crumbs, stitching a quilt
from what’s left, remaindered, given up
for gone. Better at betting the careless
will miss the best. Count me among
the nightbirds who sip starlight, a guitar’s
fading strains. Find me where moondust
swirls in streetlamp glow and stray dogs sleep.
What clings to the bone is most sweet.

Just a quick celebratory post in honor of a now 20-year-old meme, upon which the original version of "Creative" in my fancy rats mood theme was based. May we all continue to find joy in the harmless memes of yore.

Things in my neighborhood are starting to bloom, so I got out of the house in the on-and-off overcast and photographed some.

I agree with this post that the human body was not designed to know what the worst person in the world is doing every fifteen minutes, but it was not possible for me to avoid hearing that the man in the White House shared AI slop of himself as Jesus healing the sick for Pascha. It was much nicer to discover that Aimee Mann circa 'Til Tuesday belonged so clearly to the elusive Bowie–Swinton species. She could have starred in Liquid Sky (1982).

In my spinning session the other day I listened to Will the Last One to Leave Please Turn Out the Lights? and really enjoyed it. The despair of living under The Idiot, the slow crumbling of society, the recurring phrases, were all great analogies for the world we live in now.

I've recently finished this Life of Colour art board, a etched MDF board which I coloured in with acrylic paint pens. I'm really happy with how it turned out.

Now I just need to rearrange the walls of my craft room so I can get all this art I've been making out of the cupboard and put it on display.

My federal and state tax forms were e-filed and accepted this weekend. I'm so glad that's over.

I sent e-mails to three different taxslayer e-mail addresses trying to get help with a problem, only for all of them to try to toss me somewhere else. The third one at least suggested something, even as they said they weren't allowed to. They didn't tell me how to do it, but they made a suggestion. I figured it out after playing around with various things for thirty minutes.

For some reason, Queen's A Kind of Magic, their Highlander soundtrack, came to my mind, so I borrowed it from the library. Of course, "Princes of the Universe" is here, but you probably know that one so what I put here is "Who Wants to Live Forever," which is about the movie's love story and can make me teary-eyed. It has churchy organs, some orchestral sections, and Freddie Mercury really feeling the lyrics.

Regular Car Reviews thoroughly roasts the Cybertruck, with some of the comments/insults making me literally LOL. Also funny to me was that when I looked at the roads they're riding on, my immediate thought was "This is Pennsylvania all right."
