So, one of my pet peeves is that bumper sticker that says, “School’s open -- Drive carefully.” At 11 at night, that’s not true; it’s like having a bumper sticker that proudly proclaims, “It’s 9 am!” Not to mention the inherent ridiculousness of such an exhortation. Thus, [livejournal.com profile] misterrivkat got me a T-shirt, sadly not a bumper sticker, that says this. It’s from Ben's Ironic Iron-On T-Shirt Factory.

These are vids in my head, and if God is kind, they will stay that way. Except I actually might make #3. Comment if you can ID them.

1. I’m in the basement
You’re in the sky (Angel/Cordelia, end of S3/beginning of S4)
Placebo, English Summer Rain, [livejournal.com profile] varadia (link to page with video)

2. And I’m sending you to heaven
Heaven has no sodomy

3. If you let me I could love you to death
Tom McRae, A Day Like Today, [livejournal.com profile] coffee_and_ink (if you sign up and log on to the forum, you get access to some nice streaming songs, though downloads would be a much better idea, especially since most of what's available is non-album)

4. Shut up
No one said to open your mouth
Shut up
If you do not like me how about
Shut up
(this would be my Lex anthem if I could credibly say “y'all bitches need to just step the fuck off” the way LaT can)

5. And I thank you for those items that you sent me
The monkey and the plywood violin
(Alias, Jack)
Leonard Cohen, First We Take Manhattan, [livejournal.com profile] harriet_spy

6. The music's too loud and the noise from the crowd
Increases the chance of misinterpretation
So let your hips do the talking
(Buffy/Spike)

7. I wear a smile like a leather glove
Won’t shut my mouth for less

8. Your arms look so powerful
When they hold me down

9. You’re a little bit damaged
I’m a sucker for that
Lauren Hoffman, Broken, [livejournal.com profile] coffee_and_ink (Broken is available from the second link, but there are a bunch more at the main site)

10. There’s safety in numbers
When you learn to divide
Peter Gabriel, Not One of Us, [livejournal.com profile] me_n_thee

11. We’re too young to die so we better live fast
The dying is easy, the urge is so hard

12. It's alright if you go
I'll get along here without you
Falling in love is just something I do every day.

Side note – doing this gave me valuable information. I’d thought the Magnetic Fields song lyric was “I’ve always gotten guys on whom I can depend,” which made for some confusion about what came next. Turns out it’s “I’ve always got ten guys on whom I can depend, and if you’re not mine, one less is nine.”

Does this date me?

As for the "School's open" bumper stickers, they bring to mind the "Drive carefully, baby in back" things I used to see a lot around here. The implication that it's somehow more acceptable to crash into a car containing only adults has always mystified me.

Only as much as it dates me.

And that's exactly what infuriates me about the Drive Carefully bumper stickers. Because if kids aren't around, we ought to go nuts!

I passed a school zone yesterday that had a sign under the blinking light that proclaimed that school was open 365 days a year. I shouted, "Liar, liar!" at them even though yesterday did happen to be one of the 180 odd days that it was open.

i actually have huge issues with school zones. they make total sense in places where the kids, like, actually walk where the cars are. in my little suburban helhole, however, they're basically putting a public servant on the street to organize traffic so that the rich spoiled private school parents can drive their big ass SUVs and minivans and get the right of way (yes, i have three school zones ever morning and afternoon...why dio you ask??? :-)
