Franken: I read it too; near the middle I stopped thinking of it as comedy directed at me and started thinking of it as an instruction manual directed at other Air America hosts and at whoever writes speeches for Kerry's surrogates. As an instruction manual, not bad at all. Gordon: there's a stack of books arguing that not only family policy (narrowly defined) in the early twentieth century but almost every part of the Progressive movement was "really" an attempt to make immigrant families become more like native-born (white) American families (or to punish them for not so becoming). Buffy: agree about insiders-outsiders-- but the transformation was, I think, inevitable. I appear to be teaching a science fiction course next year...
