I think one of Ward's big arguments is that current constructions of "gayness" as identity-based make it possible for straight white men to access the pleasures of gay sex without the difficulties of gay identity--so their longing is precisely not for the hassles of a non-straight identity, but for heteronormativity while still getting off with other guys.
