The other interesting story from DS9 on the subject, if you haven't heard it, is that Sisko's in-universe inability to share everyone else's enthusiasm for the Vic Fontaine programme because of the racism of the real 1950s was Avery Brooks's actual opinion. This led some fans to react with anger at Brooks "imposing his agenda" because in the Federation racism had been extinct for centuries and nobody should care any more.
