Can we talk about the Pacific Rim bonus materials? Because I really want to talk about the character profiles where Raleigh’s says “Current love interest: Mako Mori,” and Mako’s says “Current love interest: training/Raleigh Becket.” And about how Raleigh is totally ok with that ordering. Happy to have been nominated! Also I would like to talk about “current,” since that recognizes that they are people moving through time and that there might be other love interests in their histories! (Not their futures. I don’t want to talk about that, unless the word “threesome” is involved.)

Also this set of graphics on expectations v. reality of Pacific Rim perfectly sums up my reaction.

Yes, I'm super in love with "I knitted you a helmet-cozy, pls wear it" Raleigh, and it makes me a little sad that Raleigh/Chuck is a bigger 'ship than Mako/Raleigh, although I do see that Chuck is a perfectly engineered bit of fan-nip.

I have selective vision: I am unable to see fanworks that don't have Mako/Raleigh. I could make an exception for stories that had them as platonic life partners finding sexual outlets elsewhere. This selective vision also applies to the scientists, since I found them offputting.

I should probably just killfile the german scientists, since it annoys me every time I come across it, although I make an exception for stories where one of them is secretly a kaiju.

(I once read an amazing story where Herman was a kaiju, and Newt was (understandably) all about that, and totally sexed him up, and I was like "Wait a second, kaiju juices are corrosive, use a condom! Also, no way Newt wouldn't want to bag a sample, c'mon.")

Secret kaiju seems a harder secret to keep than the usual ones. Vampire, werewolf, those can be worked around ... kaiju, less so.

Well, the general work-around seems to be that since kaiju are engineered, if you're engineering a kaiju for infiltration, it can look like whatever you want.

This is actually a genre.

Unsurprisingly, I had that thought as soon as I posted. Fandom: not only stranger and bigger than we imagine, but stranger and bigger than we can imagine.

Yes, I love that graphic. It definitely sums up Raleigh's arc in Pacific Rim. It was wonderful to see Raleigh by all emotionally mature and able to deal with his own grief and anger in productive, non-jerkish ways.

Of course, the Mako & Pentecost coming-of-age arc is the heart of the movie for me. How often do you get to see father-daughter stories where the father acknowledges that his daughter is a competent adult? I love the 'I need you to protect me' part so much!

And the K-scientist plot is also a lot of fun; how often do scientists get to be listened to like that in a action movie? And not punished by the plot for arrogance?
