Three NYT headlines, one societal clusterf*ck:

West Antarctica Warming Faster Than Thought
: "New research suggests that the huge ice sheet there could collapse, with potentially drastic effects on the sea level."

How G.O.P. Shifted to ‘No New Taxes,’ Ever: "Some Republicans fear that the opposition to tax increases is coming at the expense of fiscal responsibility."

The Ultimate Amenity: Grandparents
: "Some affluent New Yorkers are buying apartments near their own so their parents can be closer to grandchildren."  Something about the juxtaposition just really made me sad at how quickly we are becoming a lifeboat society, and certain people have been pre-allocated the boats.

In slightly different news, Harvard is offering a MOOC copyright course from 1/28/2013 to 4/22/2013: it’s free, though you have to apply.  It should be interesting. Terry Fisher, who will be lecturing, was a speaker at the conference that is in part responsible for the creation of the OTW, because of all the guys on stage talking about how they’d invented this awesome new thing where they edited videogame footage to music. I’m not dinging the creativity of machinima--everyone gets to invent fandom—but it was definitely a moment where it was clear that some public representation from our kinds of fandom was called for, because history was going to be written and policy made with or without us, and with us was better.  I would be very curious about how Fisher teaches “user-generated content” these days.  It would be neat if one of you guys had the time to sign up and report back!

I'm confused about the grandparent thing. Sounds like the perfect solution actually. My cousin bought a set of duplexes for that very reason, my grandparents had one side, he had one and my mother had one until she moved out. It was a little too close for her, which is also the reason we didn't rent next to my brother when the house became available, but apparently a lot of people don't mind being close to relatives. Sure the people in this article are hella affluent but us poor folks do it too.

Ooh, that MOOC sounds really interesting. I've been wanting to take part in one to see what it's like, and this sound just like something I badly need - a serious course on copyright, including non-US copyright, that's also open to people without a background in law and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Moving to another country in the middle of it and it's a huge time commitment, but... so shiny.

Was Fisher also talking about user-generated content at that conference? I don't remember an emphasis on it in the only book of his I've read (Promises to Keep).

I'm already enrolled in EdX, doing MIT's Intro to C.S. class this semester, and I applied. The fates only know if they'll accept my application(1) -- I haven't heard one way or the other yet and don't expect to, given the holidays, for a while -- but should I report back about course content if accepted?

(1) I applied with a caveat on my application form that I would only, during class discussions, refer to certain individuals external to the course by their chosen pseudonyms...*g*

The bit about machinima makes me smile and sigh a little bit, because my primary fandom right now is a video game - and the company who makes it recently released the programming engine they use to make the promotional videos and character design, allowing people to make their own videos using the 'actors' and 'sets'. They've even gone so far as to have contests to see who can make the best videos, with the winner getting a free trip to the company headquarters.

So yes, I'm curious as well for how he'd teach "user-generated content" with this context.

Well, I just learned that I got into the copyright course, so this should be interesting. Thanks for the heads up about it's existence!

Hi! We don't know each other, but I got into the course too and would like to know where the other fandom people are. Could I PM both of you with what section I'm in?

Please do! I'm looking for other fannish students, in fact.

(I replied to somnolentblue's comment below this one earlier and forgot that you wouldn't be notified of that)

Hello again! I thought I'd drop by and let you know I got accepted into the Harvard copyright course.

They'll be running five hundred of us through the course -- out of an applicant pool of thousands, apparently O.o -- so I doubt I'm the only female fan in there. I am, however, a female fan willing to TELL ALL(not involving any confidences of my fellow students, of course)so let me know if there's anything specific anyone wants to know about the forthcoming proceedings.
