I enjoyed many of the Festivids, but the reason you should watch Propagation is to be recruited to Threshold, a short-lived but really neat sf alien invasion show where the aliens keep winning. Stars Carla Gugino, Peter Dinklage, and Brent Spiner, along with a very handsome military man with a mysterious backstory that sadly never got explored. Go, watch, then watch more!

Also, I don’t know if this Life vid works as a recruiter vid because the ways it employs canon to match with the lyrics are so good; watch it and find out!

Ilona Andrews, Fate’s Edge: He’s an agent of one of the magical powers on the other side of the Edge from ordinary folks. She’s a bounty hunter who fled a life of crime but gets called back in by her family for one last job. They fight crime! Well, they also commit crime and fall in love, but you get the idea. Standard urban fantasy: it’s the kind of thing you like if you like that kind of thing.

Mike Carey, The Devil You Know: And this is guy protagonist urban fantasy: An exorcist in London, in a world where ghosts etc. are known but not fully accepted by everyone. Felix Castor takes a job exorcising a ghost at an archive and gets in way over his head. Tough guy descriptions; Felix isn’t superpowered but I never felt the stakes were hugely high for him, despite the several threats of death he faced. Rape, sex slavery, and other forms of violence feature in the plot without being extensively described. Jim Butcher with a bit less juice and a lot less ‘I’m central to the supernatural world.’ I know this sounds like I didn’t like it, but it did deliver what it promised, and I’m likely to read future books in the series.

Kameron Hurley, God’s War: On the Muslim (plus a few thousand years of cultural drift) world of Umayma, a mercenary navigates between warring states, with bonus shapeshifters and magicians who can control biological functions and the insects that operate machines, surveil people, and otherwise provide technology. There’s a lot of blood and a lot of politics. It wasn’t to my taste, but if you like noir and people who spit blood in the faces of other people who are about to kill them, you might enjoy it.
