From the hiring side, a story about part of the reason for the male/female pay gap where there's salary discretion. I've tried to ask for more where relevant of late, and though sometimes I've gotten yes and sometimes no, I've never been worse off for asking.

Pay - what all girls should know
Am currently job-hunting at the moment so this is very apposite though, given the comment in the middle about the study finding that men and women tended to view women who tried to negotiate as 'grasping', not quite the cut and dried advice I would like!

OTOH, both I and a former colleague also did experience negative worklife/career impact from asking for raises. Not gonna go into details on a public post, but there is still the attitude in some places that it should be a privilege to work there, and subconsciously I think a lot of managers still tack on "especially if you're a girl."
