jadelennox: Manip of the cover of Westerfeld's Peeps with a marshmallow peep vampire (chlit: peeps)
From: [personal profile] jadelennox
When I teach it, I find that students find it very off-putting (ObDisclaimer: I loved it as a teen and still do), because they don't like the hero. What I have found in working with them is that contemporary supernatural romance valorizes Edward Cullenesque stalkerish behavior, so Laura's very down-to-earth recognition of Sorry's mild adolescent boy sketchiness (e.g. watching her breathe) seems horrific to them, because the text doesn't praise the behavior as it would in a contemporary romance.
