Chloe. Prompt: bright lights, big city/new kid on the block. S9 fic.

“So what do you do all day?” Lois asked, after finishing her rant about the difficulty of stalking politicians in post 9-11 America (Lois was of the opinion that no terrorist, however deranged, would target the Deputy Mayor of Metropolis; she considered security measures an excuse for cover-ups and corruption), which had morphed into a rant on running in heels and the disaster that was the Chuck wedge (“dear God, why?”), which had somehow segued into a rant on unreliable colleagues (in which Clark only featured prominently rather than as a main character, due mostly Chloe thought to the fact that Lois had been having trouble with IT of late), which had become a review of the top three Indian restaurants in Metropolis (Lois would go a long way for a good gulab jamun). “I mean, I basically know what a nonprofit is. But do you just sit and spend money, or what?”

The good news was that Chloe’s first order of business had been coming up with a Lois-proof explanation, because the question had been inevitable. “I review grant applications for Ollie’s foundation. And then I use my investigative skills to check up on the applicants.”

Lois nodded, clearly of the opinion that no sensible person would ever rely on what an applicant said about its operations. “And what happens if you discover, just for example, fraud or, I don’t know, a juicy sexual harassment scandal?”

Chloe grinned. “Then I guess I call my cuz at the Daily Planet.”

“Right answer!” Lois had a shark’s smile, yes, but it was really kind of irresistable when you weren’t the one about to get eaten. “You know, I’m really glad you landed on your feet, Chloe. Metropolis is an easy place to get lost in.”

Chloe felt her mouth twitch, but she managed to limit herself to a nod, as if she’d spent less of her life in big cities than Lois. Okay, yes, she was more awkward in unfamiliar places than Lois was, but that was only because ‘awkward’ took one look at Lois and ran shrieking away. Lois’s sage pronouncements were part and parcel of Lois. “I’m not worried,” she assured Lois. “I know you and Clark will always have my back.”

“Darn tootin’,” Lois said, and reached for her ignored bowl of ice cream, which was now soupy enough that she could nearly drink it: just the way Lois liked it. Or maybe she’d learned to like it that way because she always talked so much that she never got to ice cream while it was still frozen, Chloe wasn’t sure. Either way, it was comforting to see Lois go through the ritual. “Though if you need someone beaten up, it’d better be me you call,” Lois added, between slurps. “Kent’s great at a lot of things, but combat? Not so much.”

Lois squeaked in surprise when Chloe caught her up in a hug (trusting, correctly, that Lois would bobble sufficiently to keep the ice cream from spilling and going to waste). “You’re the best,” Chloe told her, meaning it even more than ever.

There was going to be a day when Lois couldn’t be shielded from her friends’ secret lives any more. She’d be furious, and she’d be excited, and she’d be a willing participant. But Chloe wanted her like this just a little bit longer, enjoying the mystery and comforted by the thought that there was a larger force out there protecting and inspiring the rest of them. And if Lois hadn’t figured it out yet, it was only because she didn’t want to: if she’d really been desperate to know the Blur’s identity, then she would have deduced it probably even before Clark had decided to become the Blur.

No, Lois was just getting herself ready to think it through. And when she did, Chloe would tolerate a whole new set of lectures, and then welcome another protector for Clark, one with a heart as big as the whole city.

Chloe was looking forward to the fireworks.

Aw! I really loved how you wrote Lois in all her awesomeness.

I read this on the way home from work last night and wanted to comment on an actual computer rather than a smartphone. I'm not watching SV, but this makes me want to! I miss Chloe and I like the idea of her working with Ollie, and I like the sense I get from this story of Lois -- and Clark (is he really now calling himself ...the Blur??) -- finding their way out of Smallville and into their more well-known selves.

Two other things:

1. I liked the Gossip Girl short as well. Also haven't kept up with that show, but I can totally picture Chuck and Blair taking swipes at each other until they eventually both retire to wherever it is rich old UES'ers retire.

2. GUH! at your big journal header pic. I almost didn't even start this comment, it's so distracting.

I really liked this. Just women and family and friendship and loyalty. Love Lois here as well (and Chloe's affection for her).

Just warm fuzzies all over.
