I'm not really a Clarkologist, but I'm not sure about this Clark, either. He seems awfully naive, awfully slow on the uptake, especially for S3 or later. By the end of S2 Lex has already said "I've always wanted to meet an alien" *meaningful look*, among other things -- it's really hard for me to buy that Clark doesn't know that Lex knows, at least subconsciously. To me, things like:
It was all just guesses. Lex couldn't know about the ship; he'd never even hinted that he'd deciphered the Kryptonian in the caves. "I don't know what you're talking about." He clenched his hands into fists, wanting to seem more resolute.
seem a bit stupid for a Clark this far along in life. He should be, at least, being hit with the realization that he'd been lying not to protect his secrets, but to protect -- what?
The way things stand at this summer's point in canon, I can see a Clark/Lex relationship where they (tacitly or explicitly) agree not to talk about certain things, but it's hard for me to see them being so antagonistic about it, still. Unless you can include an explanation having to do with Clark's fear of Red!Clark, or his fears about sex, or something.
