copracat has done a much better job than I could talking about why it’s good for fans to own the servers. For me, the OTW is primarily about the role an organization can play in preserving fandom when individual hard-working fans have to abandon archives or other fannish projects that have brought joy to many people. I think of the journal, fun and informative as it is, as also making a statement about the value of fandom to outsiders, whether copyright owners or lawyers: it’s a way of saying that fandoms are vibrant cultures that do good, and that of the many ways TPTB might relate to fandoms (ignore, tolerate, embrace, coopt), the one that won’t work is suppression. In any event, here’s a bit more about the projects and a call for support:
