rivkat: Mrs. Lovett: bright ideas just pop into my head (bright ideas)

So the American Heritage Dictionary says the term "logrolling" for trading political favors came from "the early American practice of neighbors gathering to help clear land by rolling off and burning felled timber." I was thinking about this because the neologism "blogroll" seems to me an improvement on the original -- it conveys both the meaning of "I'll pimp your site and you pimp mine" carried over from "logroll" and also the ordinary meaning, "roll [call] of blogs" that you don't need to know the meaning of logrolling to get. I was wondering whether there are other neologisms that improve upon the original like that.

Anyhow, in the spirit of blogrolling, Sarah T is looking for someone to take over Level Three, the all-fic Smallville archive. Please, please, won't someone who knows how to do this help? I could contribute cash, but I haven't the skills to maintain the archive otherwise. This is a great place to have, y'all, especially for people like me who sometimes write (horrors!) things that aren't slash. Smallville is blessed to have a few comprehensivish archives, and Level Three is by design the most comprehensive. Please don't let it go dark!

I don't usually recommend fanfic, because I'm usually behind the curve -- if I've seen it and it's SV, anybody who might be interested has probably seen it as well. But Verism, if that's her name, doesn't seem to have an LJ -- correct me if I'm wrong, will you? And Luthor Detail and The 0100 were interesting short stories. The first is basically a sweet futurefic with a few very nice touches; the second is a crossover with "The 4400," though I don't think you need to know anything about the show for the story to work, and it starts off with the best observation about Clark's football playing I've seen and then goes someplace very different.

Oh, I am so far behind in my reviews. The stack on my desk is about three feet high. And the Deep Discount DVDs arrived today, tempting me away from writing ...

A little bit of fiction: Sean Stewart, Kristine Kathryn Rusch, F. Paul Wilson, Guy Gavriel Kay )
