rivkat: Rivka as Wonder Woman (Default)

I just got my copy of More B.S., Bree Sharp's second CD. Her first, mainly known for the funny song "David Duchovny," had some very good songs, including the Dar Williams-like "America" and the just plain awesome "Faster, Faster." Her second CD is a bit of a disappointment. I'm not throwing it in the trash, and I did rip many of the songs to iTunes (I don't really use CDs anymore), but she's ... smoothed out, I guess. Her voice seems to have lost many of its rough edges, even on songs like her cover of "Boys of Summer" where a bit of roughness would have improved things, and the lyrics didn't grab me. Now she's just another female vocalist.

I probably shouldn't have gotten my hopes up. Speaking of high hopes, Tori Amos has a new record label and a new CD coming out in October. Along with the new Stephen King, I'm really looking forward to it. Other new releases to watch out for:

A new book from James Alan Gardner, whose series about the "Expendables" is great sf space exploration fun (the flavor's a bit like the juvenile Heinleins, but much heavier on the office politics aspect of a space fleet -- think the darker aspects of Podkayne of Mars, not Have Space Suit Will Travel).

A new book from Susan Matthews, whose "Exchange of Hostages" is *the* book to read about why someone might become a torturer and still have a moral code of sorts.

Amazon.com's sf and fantasy recommendations have not been interesting me, though in the past they've worked okay, so if you like these 2 authors and have recommendations, let me know.
