Thank you! I think it was a tactical mistake to let John live; he should have been sacrificed to get rid of Azazel. Nonetheless, I understand why Sam couldn't do that--it would have cost him Dean, and frankly he weighs Dean more heavily than the rest of the six billion.
They are going to be awesome hunters. It's not over with Azazel and the demons, though, so John has plenty to angst about even if he's not required to sell his soul to save his son.
