I’m not sure why I, a non-anthropologist, should have the same empathy when a core part of their identity is refusing exactly that to me.

The problem is that it doesn't even matter whether you do or don't. The problem is that even if you did, they still wouldn't empathize with you. And either way, they'll take direct action to oppress others.

This is so depressing. It's one of those situations where you'd probably have better luck getting through to someone who's a worse person but less defensive/in denial about it. I mean, I would personally probably have a more productive/interesting conversation with a member of ISIL than with one of those guys.
