Concession, by obsession_inc, an AU that seems to me to be a 2010 version of a classic story; to say which one would be spoilery, and you might not agree with me.  Creeping horror: Christine Everhart tries to figure out what happened to Pepper Potts.  I don't think you have to be in IM fandom to appreciate this one.

Also, I have a new mattress, yay!  Back to sleeping on cotton-covered slab instead of expensive failed experiment in supersoftness.  Apparently I am denser than I should be, or something, because I just felt like I was sinking into marshmallow.  News to me: mattress variety has increased a lot since the last time we bought one.

Isn't that an awesome story? It's such a pleasure to read Lena's stuff: it's been forever since she posted anything so meaty and long. And frankly it's even better than her (far too few) XF stories were.

Yay new mattress? If I move in the next few months I am definitely investing in a new mattress.

I will admit my failure to connect the XF dots here.

The failed mattress was new, too; it's just that you can now get a really wide range of softnesses, and I did not figure out until way too late that none of that range was for me.

It's not a secret: Obsession-Inc is Magdalene from XF, who wrote Gutless (aka The Parrot Fic) and Bonemeal (one of those stories that make me grind my teeth in jealous frustration, because it's just. that. good.). She was in Yes Virginia. Doesn't write nearly enough as far as I'm concerned.

Is the classic story you're thinking of by Dr. Benway, perchance?

X-Manson. Similar creepiness/conspiracy factor, more gore.

I believe the author cited that story as explicit inspiration, whereas my comparison did not come to mind until I commented.
