Note: I haven’t watched recent episodes. Anyway, futurefic, angsty?
“Chuck,” Blair spat (not enough sibilants to hiss), near enough to his ear that he could feel her breath on his skin.
He turned, letting the drink in his hand lead the way, so that she stepped back to avoid any couture collision. “Mrs. – What is it this year? I can never remember.”
Blair ignored the obvious lie. The years had taught her to keep more of what she was feeling off her face, but her cheeks were still flushed pink, perfect contrast to her complexion. And he could see everything in her eyes. “I know you don’t care about your own scandals, but you need to keep Serena out of it.”
“I didn’t realize she was in it,” Chuck drawled, returning his gaze to where Serena was holding court, sparkling like the only other diamond in a field of asphalt.
“Look at you! You can’t keep your eyes off her, you’ve been following her around, you had your hand on her back--people are talking!”
“She’s very beautiful,” Chuck pointed out.
Now Blair’s face compressed with pain, as if she didn’t understand, didn’t see what Chuck saw every time he looked at Serena. Maybe she didn’t: Blair had never seen herself clearly, after all. “She’s my daughter,” Blair said, like she was ripping the words out of her gut.
Chuck tipped his glass and drank deeply, until he was done. “But she’s not mine.”
