These are all going to be spectacularly obvious or fantastically obscure.

1. We grew up together. I met you at my grandparents’, actually, and we spent so many wonderful hours hanging out together. It never went beyond that, and we grew apart after a while. In college, I was disdainful of your new look for a long time, then we got together and it turned out that you had real depths. You’ve reinvented yourself since then, and I have to admit I liked the old you better, but you will always be in my heart, agape if not eros.
2. You weren’t my first, but you were awfully close – I spent hours in my room thinking about you. I wanted to do things with you I didn’t have names for. I wrote you letters. You wrote back, and you were sweet even though you’d seen it all before in other girls. It’s for that reason that I still think of you fondly, even though your sexual politics are terrible – seriously, do you still insist that homosexuality is a physical impossibility for you?
3. You hurt me in ways I didn’t know I could be hurt.
4. You were just what I needed. Fun, inventive – and the threesomes were awesome. I never got tired of you even when “us” was over. You pissed off a lot of people, but in my eyes you were almost always true to yourself, and I like that self.
5. It was a hard time for me, and for the country. In retrospect, I was looking for someone, even if I wasn’t thinking about it that way at the time. You only had flashes of brilliance, but you made me feel smart. I fell harder than I could have expected, and I’m still a little bit in love, even though it’s now mostly with your extended family. Also, I’m keeping all our friends – by now they’re more mine than yours, I fear.
6. You were so wonderful, and you were growing so fast. And then – disaster. I visited you every chance I got, but there wasn’t anything you or I could do about it. I think about you a lot, even though we never got together. I’ll always love you.
7. I have a standard spiel about my type. You are not my type. You’re my anti-type. I don’t even like most of your characteristics. I can’t watch you work; I’m too squeamish. But the things you do, you do so well. You’re deeply cynical about human nature, but also so much more earnest than you like to pretend. You’re still my boy on the side.

3. XF (Was it Mely who said that this is everyone's description of the XF?)

I love this meme!

Is 3 smallville? I'm only guessing that because I'm feeling that exact way myself. 2 could also be Smallville.

7 might be House?

I don't know what your type or anti-type is, but I think Nip/Tuck could be either no. 4 or no. 7.

(I'm learning from this game to use people's icons as clues, finally!)

This is completely out of left field, but 2 sounds a lot like my reactions to Jacqueline Lichtenberg's Sime/Gen books.

3. X-Files?
5. Buffy?
6. Smallville??
7. Nip/Tuck?

1 & 6 yes, the others no. (But many are on the list!)

And for the win! That was the one I wasn't really expecting anyone to get. I really did write a letter to the fanzine with my little Mary Sue fantasies, and the editors published it and were kind.

Smallville is on there, but not in either of those places. SV can't hurt me as badly as that because my heart never fully healed -- though it can still make me suffer!

N/T is number 7. Yeah, I could have left the icon off, but there's never enough Christian love in the world.

My type is fantasy/sf, pretty much exclusively, as in, Lost isn't genre enough for me. But Julian McMahon kills me.

3 & 7 yes; Buffy & SV are on the list, but not in those places.

5 is totally SV.

Yay!

And yeah, either Sime/Gen or Darkover was my gateway drug into active fandom; I was on multiple mailing lists for both of them for years, wrote the occasional LOC, etc.

I have loved Julian McMahon since the line he has in the pilot of Profiler. But I have loved almost no bad boyfriend on the side like Christian, ever. What a fabulous fuck-up, truly.

everyone's description of the XF

Srsly.

We're all such ex wives over the X-Files.

It's like we married and divorced Chris Carter AND Mulder.

I think Oyce said it was everyone's description of XF.

I still own all the Sime/Gen books and I will probably buy the new one if Meisha Merlin ever publishes it.

I will buy it too if allowed, and it still won't be the guiltiest pleasure on my shelf. That's reserved for A Distant Soil.
