About those motivations

It seems as though instant lust is one of the conventions of yaoi, which is fine: that's generally only the beginning of the story. On the other hand, I detest the chibi frames as much as anyone does -- they very seldom work.

I just recently read (and re-read, and re-read) Kimi Shiruya, and found it a good, strong story, mostly under the surface, and much more erotic than the general run of school-boy romances, even without the obligatory sex scene. I can see, though, where you wouldn't be grabbed by it if individual competition leaves you cold: that's an essential component of the characters.

For a one-shot yaoi, I can recommend Seven by Momoko Tenzen -- it's beautiful and the emotional context is fairly tough -- and motivations make sense. I can also recommend Hyouta Fujiyama's two-volume Sunflower -- she gives herself enough room to develop the story fully, and the side story at the end of vol. 2 is quite good. It's also her best graphic work.

I started with shoujo manga -- Vampire Knight, I think -- which got me used to the conventions pretty quickly. Now I'm getting way too enthusiastic about anime.
