I don't mean to nitpick, Tom, but is this really your plan?

As someone whose last name was an Ellis Island invention, I'm not too worked up about it. And our recordkeeping is much better these days, so the clues of last names (which varied a lot in orthography even for related people) are probably less critical. But I doubt it will really catch on, as Slate says.
