rivkat: Rivka as Wonder Woman (denial)

Whew.

My Yuletide story is done. I'm deeply dissatisfied, because it's actually just the beginning of a story, but I'd have to wait until *next* Yuletide to get that done. Someday, I want to write the Great American Alien Invasion Novel, but probably not this year. (Yes, it is a fascination of mine. Is that so wrong? Today in B&N I saw a new paperback novel, the conceit being that the government is secretly selling humans as sex slaves to alien races. The cover spiel said that it was the beginning of a new series about slavery, rebellion, and -- not a direct quote, but good enough -- the triumph of the human spirit. I didn't buy it, but now I wonder if I'm not morally required to do so.)

So, uh, who wrote the novel? Or, er...title? *g*

Darn my eyes, I can't remember. Surely Amazon must carry it -- and how many results can there be on Amazon for "alien sex slave"?

As it turns out, over 21,000. That is deeply disturbing. But! It was the third result.

Trying again -- the last post had the link, but it was contained in a weird period. Susan Wright, Slave Trade. (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0743457633/qid=1072071050/sr=1-3/ref=sr_1_3/002-1956113-4092861?v=glance&s=books)

I so want you to write that novel. Because we don't have it yet.

[identity profile] villeinage.livejournal.com 2003-12-22 07:27 am (UTC)(link)
Hee. I clicked on the link, and I just love that Amazon offered to gift-wrap a book on alien sex slaves for me.

And also that the first review starts off with "Not explicit enough."

And I had to chime in with a hearty "me, too" on the whole Yuletide-story-wants-to-be-a-novel thing. I thought I was the only one.

No reason you shouldn't have at it. Niven & Pournelle went to town with FOOTFALL so you can too. I'd buy a copy. And as far as the alien sex slave thing goes, I have two words for you: John Norman. Ugh.

[identity profile] rivkat.livejournal.com 2003-12-22 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll see your John Norman and raise you Sharon Green.

I think I may have been a slightly twisted child.

[identity profile] shiba-inu.livejournal.com 2003-12-24 08:52 am (UTC)(link)
A difference that makes no difference is no difference. I've always thought that "John Norman" was just a pseudonym for Sharon Green, anyway. Norman's sentence construction always struck me as female -- those endless dependent clauses, you know... (g)

I was never into BtVS but I've seen a few episodes. I just read ALLEGIANCES through the link you posted below. Jeez, girl. You just can't write a bad story, can you? I have to say, though: that's a pretty chilling image of Giles you left me with.

[identity profile] rivkat.livejournal.com 2003-12-24 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad you liked the story; it was sort of a challenge to myself to write a series of one-on-one interactions, so the construction is a bit odd but ended up satisfying me. Buffy is a great show, and even a limping last year didn't leave me bitter and betrayed the way the XF did. You might give it a try on DVD.

Your comment is also further proof that authors aren't the best people to talk about what's in their own stories. It's obvious to me now that Giles here is acting little better than the Initiative, doing stuff for Buffy's own good, but I was so caught up in his mentality when I wrote it that I didn't notice; someone else had to point it out to me.

You are not morally required to purchase anything that advertises itself as the first in a series, unless it involves Neil Tennant, Joss Whedon, or both.

totally OT

[identity profile] rashaka.livejournal.com 2003-12-23 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
So, a long time ago, I remember reading a Buffy fic on the fic website that you and Mustang Sally have. Or had, because the one linked on your journal doesn't look like how I remember it and doesn't have said fic. Anyway, the fic. I don't remember the title except that it was one word and started with R. It basically had evil Riley, psycho witch Willow, evil season 4 government and this horribly sad scene where Buffy asks Spike to kill her and then he dusts himself. I was feeling morbid at the time I read it, so I liked it, even though mass death fics aren't normally my thing. I don't remember if this fic was a you thing or a Mustang Sally thing or a joint thing.

Anyway, now that I've given you the proper exposition, onto the main question of my post. You know how there are little things that you read that just stick in your head? Well, I've always wondered about something I read in that story. It was in this scene where Willow has a confrontation with Evil!Riley, and she talks about how now she's only peanuts, but given a few more years of study she'd flay him alive with her witchy mojo. There was a line in that scene that I just found myself remembering, and being curious about. I was gonna quote it, but the fic page doesn't have that fic anymore, so I can't. It was something about words that are acts, or represent action, and there was marriage mentioned as an example. I remember I thought that was very interesting. I was wondering if that was something [you] read about (I'm curious if this is the case), or some that [you] just made up because it sounded really cool (which is understandle.)

The site still has Allegiances, here (http://www.disenchantedkingdom.com/rtbtvs.htm). Anyhow, the notion of performative language is not original to me. Here's (http://online.sfsu.edu/~kbach/perform.html) a short summary of J.L. Austin's How To Do Things With Words, which is the source of the idea.

Allegiances

Darn! I was sure it started with R. But anyway, yep, that's the fic. Guess I missed it.

Oh, thanks! I'll be checking that out. Appreciate you answering my question.

I'm about to rec this story on my lj, and to try to disect it. It's been eating at me for 24 hours. I can't remember when a fanfic has got under my skin like this.

Also, Marc Cohn! yay. His song "Providence" can be read as X-files fanfic. No idea if that was intentional or not, but give it a listen.

[identity profile] rivkat.livejournal.com 2004-01-03 11:48 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, I'd be thrilled if you did that. I hear "Lost You in the Canyon" as a Clark/Lex song, for obscure reasons, but I'll check out "Providence."
