pop culture!

Best exam aside yet: For a question using the names Jack O’Neill, Daniel Jackson, Sam Carter, and T. Murray, student begins, “this all assumes that the Goa’uld don’t conquer the Earth.”

I actually have a SV thought:I loved the in-joke of sending Daniel Jackson to the Pyramids. I didn’t say it was a deep SV thought. Also, yay Lex! Yay for letting Lex run for President the first year he was constitutionally eligible.

Further Fringe thoughts: I love this show so much. Olivia gets to brood drunkenly, as heroes of a certain type often do (but women, not so much in these narratives), because Peter left her. Show, how the hell did you sell me on Peter/Olivia? Don’t get me wrong, Peter & Olivia still makes me happy too—I am not picky! Also, Alterlivia gets a completely different hot guy, because destiny is her team, not her romance—another surprising and awesome thing! Shallowly: Hi, arms of Broyles! Can we have you back in our universe, too? Not so sure about that beret, Lt. Farnsworth, but you wear it with aplomb. And in conclusion, I would just like to emphasize something we’ve known for several episodes: “Walternate” is a canonical name. My glee cannot textually be rendered!

Awwww. Because of course one of the first things the Goa'uld would do is change USian IP law? *grins* (This reminds me of a very funny exchange with Minnow and Katie_m about SG-1 as ficwriters.)

I am always amazed that more students do not twig to the fact that a tiny bit of appropriate humor included in the margins of a response almost always puts the person grading in a better mood right before said grader is going to read the student's response.

And that bit of humor is positively awesome.

I'm also amused that it's entirely possible that somewhere else on a journaling service, a student is saying to his or her friends "So, how awesome is it that my prof used these names in an exam question on . . ."

I DO hope you gave your student extra, extra credit, or at least some nice naquada (sp?). HEE!

Viv, if you check back, you can use OpenID by plugging in your LJ name and validating the address once. After that you are able to just keep commenting--or of course someone would be happy to give you a DW code.

I had a pop culture moment like that when reading an urban fantasy novel a while back, where one of the characters said that "in her car they went by Winchester rules: driver picks the music, shotgun shuts his cakehole," and later she was listing heroic characters named Jack, and came up with Jack O'Neill, Captain Jack Sparrow, Captain Jack Harkness.... it was a great moment of nerd solidarity. Or when I'm hanging out with someone fairly new and they drop a quote or reference to one of my favorite shows. Best moments ever!

The Enchantment Emporium by Tanya Huff who is def a fangirl. One of the characters in her Vampire series IIRC was inspired by a character in Forever Knight.

The Enchantment Emporium by Tanya Huff. (Link is to the almost-released paperback edition, but the hardback's been out since last year.) It's a really awesome, kind of oddball urban fantasy, very immersive and requires you to just throw up your hands and go with it. The book opens with the heroine waking up in bed the morning after a threesome, and there's maybe one character in entire book who is actually straight, everyone else is either gay or bisexual, and open relationships are kind of the expected norm. It's got a really fascinating sub-narrative about an inversion of power, where in the Family women are the ones with the charms-and-kitchen-witchery and men are the ones with Big Ritual Magery: but the women are the real power. Plus, it's funny as hell, was written by a fellow geek (clearly), and the romance was interesting (if a little too true-love-ish for my usual tastes). Also, the dragons.

(Yeah, this book is a favorite, can you tell?)

Yeah and she gets to drink whatever it is neat and not just in the noir ep (and it's funny that Alterlivia says she can't stand the taste so it's not like the show does it unconsciously). I am also surprised by how much I do not mind Peter /or& Olivia and was happy to see Alterlivia's hot guy.

I knew Lance Reddick was a hotass but I did not know exactly how much he was hiding under those suits. As for the beret, I was distracted by the hotness that was cyborg!Astrid.

I will never get tired of Walternate:)

Ahahahahaha.
I have to say, everyone in the Alternate Universe looked like they'd escaped from a Public Enemy video, it was both hilarious and hot. Hee.
I was saying to my husband that I love how Fringe has flipped the script on the male/female roles: Peter is, and always will be to some extent, the one who MUST BE PROTECTED AT ALL COSTS, which is unusual in most media, I've only seen it on one other show and that's Legend of the Seeker. Peter is the Key, the one who most be kept safe to save the universes and that usually never happens with male characters whereas Olivia is his badass and powerful guardian who will do anything to keep him safe. Even on Buffy, none of the guys was treated like that, all the girls were badass and to some extent the guys were too, and I've always thought Xander was the biggest badass honestly because he didn't have any powers and yet he still did what needed to be done, and on Supernatural it was, and unfortunately will always be, all about Sam but on Fringe and LOTS that's totally flipped, Peter and Richard are surrounded by a small army of people, led by women, who will do whatever is need to keep them alive and safe. I like it.

Yes, Peter always trust that Olivia and Astrid will look out for him and keep him safe, which, I don't know if you saw last night's ep yet or not, may come back to bite him in the ass. I find it awesome that they made this deliberate choice with both the character and the series. I can't wait to see where they go with it.
As an aside, do you think you'll be watching Supernatural next year? I keep going back and forth with it. I love Jensen and Jared and I'd watch for them but I keep coming back to it being a five year series and I just don't know how I feel about a sixth year, I'm having horrible X-Files flashbacks where it just went on, and on, and ON when it should have just stopped.
At the same time I can see so many storylines with Samifer back and stalking/protecting Dean that I just don't KNOW!

[identity profile] theatervine.livejournal.com 2010-05-22 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
Dude I'm all about Arms of Broyles; those things are so hot they're a weapon and Alstrid is interesting, she totally knew the alternates were there from jump, I'd love to know why she didn't say anything and if she and Peter's mom are going to be the ones on the Other Side who help Earth 1 save Olivia.
There's so much fic that could come of the Samifer stalking Dean thing, I fully believe that Sam and Lucifer have merged at this point and are one entity, at least for now, that I kind of want it to be confirmed that it's true and the very though of it is scorching hot to me so I kind of want to see where it goes.
I guess I've convinced myself!
