No fan is an island

Or: when Adam delved and Eve span,
who was then the better fan?

Anyway, when I read mainstream media stories like this, it only reinforces my conviction that we are really, really frelling lucky that [livejournal.com profile] lolita07 got caught up in the purge. 30,000 fans on [livejournal.com profile] fandomcounts is great, but the reactions of Warren Ellis (of all people!) and others demonstrate that we are not quite ready for primetime, at least in primetime's opinion.

About halfway through the three things about a character prompts.

was just discussing the not-readiness of fans for the spotlight @ [livejournal.com profile] bookshop's, at least some fans won't be comfortable with the idea, no matter how innocuous their practices might be (I mean, slash is pretty mainstream, but people still won't admit they are slashers to their non-fannish friends)...on the other hand, objectively there *is* more attention to fandom nowadays, and something has to be done about it.

Yes!!!

Which is why I'm quite uncomfortable with the various direct into LJ links and the public exposure.

I really wish we'd be able to control our public image a bit more...

Yes and Yes and Yes, because I already can see the headlines: "Why Heather Can Write...Porn?"

Indeed. While I focused on how poorly the process was handled, it was unsettling in the extreme to see some of the journals and comms that were deleted. And not just the non-fandom journals: I am far too vanilla for fandom, these days.

I'm always amused when people on sites such as Cnet leave comments that others need to step away from the computer, get outside, get some exercise and sunlight when the same most likely applies to them. I know the type. I'm married to that type. A little sunlight wouldn't hurt them, either.

I've noticed that on most of the external news sites that are writing this up, especially the first CNet article, nearly all of the deleted journals that they chose to use as examples were ones with sexual content in the names. Yes, p_p was obviously a big one, but some of the individual usernames were very ordinary, but they went for the sensational ones instead.
