Have you read Steven Harper's "Silent Empire" books? Dreamer, Nightmare and Trickster. Very well-fleshed out universe, both disturbing and hopeful. Fully realized characters - and despite being written by a straight guy, Nightmare includes possibly *the* best description of that moment of gay self-realization.
