I'll give Taking America Back for God a qualified recommendation-- I get swamped by the denseness of the research (it's by two sociologists) and possibly by some emotional issues at my end. I've listened to long videos by the authors.
Anyway, the general idea is that there's a substantial proportion of the US who think God wants a Christian America-- except (this is my phrasing) they're not actually interested in the religion, they're just using it as a trademark for status assertion.
The authors were surprised to find out about this political movement.
It's a bit of a mental twist from a lot of what I see-- the issue isn't white people or Christians or evangelicals, it's xenophobia and authoritarians.
