alan moore's ups and downs

Promethea: overserious and draggy, and I'm told that if you follow it past volume one it disintegrates completely, turning into a nonfiction guide to vague mystical theories. On the other hand, Moore at the time was writing something like six titles at once (all for his own America's Best Comics). I very much recommend Top Ten: a police procedural set in a gritty futuristic polis where pretty much everyone has superpowers: lots of story, lots of jokes, Steven Bochco-ish cops you can root for.
