That's pretty interesting and quite thorough. I was a bit surprised at how extensive it was.
But if I may, there are a few relatively important things they're skipping. For example, why do people do fansubbing for free? Recording, writing up subtitles and streaming so a series episode will be up 4 hours after it's premiered in the States requires some quality team effort. Why bother?
Well, because if we wait for the title to get here, we'd be waiting for weeks. And since we are part of the global communities too, we'd be left out of the loop. I stream the episodes if the waiting period is unreasonable. The Walking Dead I waited for faithfully, pop corn and big TV and everyone in the house threatened to bear severe bodily harm if they made too much noise. Supernatural too, when we were just a week or two behind the new episodes premiering. But six weeks behind? Yeah, no. I'd like to be a better person, but I'm just not that patient. I'll just watch it twice.
Also, a lot of people get a sense of justice in this; I don't quite agree, but I've heard it a lot. I'm obviously paraphrasing, but, it goes more or less like this: "Editorials steal from the authors, Amazon steals from the editorials, so why should I feel sorry for doing this?" and "it's not like I'm taking the food from someone's mouth. I get to keep the money I actually need, and worse case scenario, they'll have to wait an extra month to get a new private jet".
I'd like to feel guilty from streaming down some of my textbooks, but truth is, I need them and I can't afford them. Some day I will be able to, and I'll make amends somehow, but right now, it's original textbook or half of my non-basic-needs budget. The plural of it, meaning having an original textbook for each class each semester is simply unthinkable. I'd have to sell a kidney.
