Schama's mini-series was problematic too - I love his earlier documentaries (on British history and art, iirc) but this one was ill-defined. It was neither history nor current events, but somehow a fusion of the two combined with his own personal views as an 'outsider' about what Americans value and how that's changed over time. It was kinda a mess.
