That's really interesting about Andersen. Americans are generally really fond of natural gifts and yet not so fond of birthrights, which makes for some confused ideology. I don't remember The Ugly Duckling as being about hard work, more about "there's a place where your qualities are valued, even if the people around you don't value them yet."
