I think it read ambiguous for me in the sense that maybe Dean was just an f'd up gift for Sam. :) I have an unposted fic in my folder that deals specifically what defines righteousness - I think show really handwaved there for the sake of "interesting" mythology and plot device and the parallel duality that the writer's seem so fond of.
