With Medalon, I got it because I read a favorable review, I think by coffeeandink, though I might be mistaken. I kept thinking -- this could get better, there's promise here. And then I was overtaken by the desire to mock, as you saw.

As for the Heinlein, I think "the best parts" was my introduction too, but I wasn't really old enough to tell the difference.
