rivkat: Dean reading (dean reading)

Anyone else ever have trouble logging in to DW from your own journal? I have followed all past advice (clearing cache, cookies, etc.) to no avail, but discovered my own workaround, which is that I can log in from the “post entry” form and then everything is cake again. Bizarre.

Someone just said the most reassuring thing to me after a sticky bit at work: “don't be discouraged, i'm sure lots of other people don't ask for your help with social interaction.”  True enough!

TV: Pretty Little Liars yay! New character is new. )

Anyone else watching Under the Dome (aka the show Colin Ford, young Sam Winchester, is in)? Vague statements comparing the show to the book )

I’ve devoured Night Vale over the past few days (or it has devoured me). I’d describe it as Lovecraftian pastiche with a Cabin in the Woods absurdism, but not quite as much blood. Come for the hooded figures, the floating cat, and the desperate (and perhaps not entirely unrequited?) love the narrator has for the dreamy scientist who's come to investigate the town.  But not for the dog park.  Don't even think about the dog park. The podcast doesn’t have official transcripts, but there are unofficial ones for the first 8 episodes.

Via [personal profile] giandujakiss, the AO3 is one of Time's top 50 websites of 2013.

Also: My relationship to Diet Coke, summed up.

An essay on Superman’s dog, in the form of a conversation between the author of an unauthorized bio of Superman and his editor. I may have to buy this book ….

Pretty Little Liars spinoff! (Spoiler for a character who will leave PLL.) The guy who’s been cast reminds me just a little bit of Jensen Ackles, so I guess we can add that to my DVR at least in the first instance.

And some fiction reviews:

Diane Duane, CJ Cherryh, high school shenanigans )
I don't think it's spoilery to say that I love Spencer Hastings. I need a Spencer icon! spoilers can tell when you're lying )

Fannish freecycle: The Guild, Seasons 1 & 2. Free to good home. Also free if you take the package, the following comics: Mice Templar 1-5, Back to Brooklyn full run, The Cross Bronx full run, and Smallville 1-6.
for [personal profile] serrico: Supernatural: The cure for Dean's empty nest syndrome is giving him someone else to take care of--but even though Sam's happy Cas is back, he's a little worried about Dean falling back into old, actually-kind-of-problematic habits. Note: I’m 5 episodes behind, so this is a made-up scenario in S7.
Can we keep him? Can we? )

for [personal profile] avidrosette: SPN, Sam/Dean, Dean Winchester's Guide for the Perplexed

“A sensible man should not demand of me, or hope that when we mention a subject, we shall make a complete exposition of it.” )

for [personal profile] on_verra: SPN/Pretty Little Liars crossover! Maybe Sam and Dean come to Rosewood to investigate Ally's death and/or possible supernatural nature of "A." I guess there should be some kind of reference to S/D established relationship, because it is not possible for me to not want S/D.

Got a secret ... )

for [personal profile] avidrosette: SPN x Hershel of Ostropol, what if Castiel transported Sam and Dean to the frozen shtetl (or, you know, deepest Brooklyn) to fight the Chanukah goblins that had been terrorizing the populace at this time of year for generations?

Chag Sammy-ach! )
Google’s antisocial behavior.  Also a post about Google’s Real Name Theater, like Security Theater, and then there’s danah boyd’s excellent explanation that no, Facebook isn’t a real name service either.  As I understand it, if a Google+ name violation determination works “right,” you can still use Reader to read but not to share/etc., which is not as bad as losing access to Reader entirely, but it doesn’t seem like the process is glitch-free even on its own terms. I have a bunch of old pictures on Picasa connected to my Blogger blog, which means that even though I downloaded them for backup a suspension could still screw me up. I certainly did not realize that signing up for Google+ put my other services at risk, and I think I have to leave before I’m kicked out. In a few short weeks Google has managed to burn through my rather substantial goodwill for it.

I have always understood why people hate Jacob's TWoP reviews.  They're excessive and pretentious and just so very messy, so very proud of their overreading, which is why I loved them.  I always thought that he basically got why fandom was worth loving.  Then I read his most recent Pretty Little Liars recap.  (Side note: yay return of show!)  And got a couple of pages on why shippers--of all kinds, anyone who doesn't like the way that any show is going with respect to a relationship--are Doing It Wrong.  Disappointing enough, because talk about your glass houses, but as best I can tell this is connected, at least in his mind, with something going on in Gossip Girl vague spoilers, I guess? )
